Colt will be anouncing tomarrow that they will no longer be dealing to private citizens and no longer be producing handguns. They said it was because of all the recent cities wanting to sue the gun manufacturers and were of afraid of having to file bankruptcy. They will still be producing M-16's for the Military but that is all. Well we are now losing, if one of the biggest gun manufacturers throws in the towel the rest will fall like dominos. See people, alot of good it does to write your congressmen- they care so much about your rights LOL. The time to use the second amendment for what it was originally intended is fast approaching.

Could you post a source for your information?
I've been searching news sources on the Internet and the only thing I've seen is a reference to the "smart gun" being made by iColt, a spinoff of Colt, while Colt focuses on military contracts.

Though I hate to see any firearms manufacturer quit selling to the public, Colt's reaction isn't a surprise. They've always been a little too politically correct.

This is most likely a rumor because you all know well and good that if Colt announced this that it would be on the evening news or at least the newspapers. Not a peep from any of them. There's too much money to be made selling firearms to the citizens. Just making M16's for the government? Highly unlikely. Now, here is something about Colt that is true and verifiable as it was announced not only by Colt but by their authorized dealers. Colt will no longer be manufacturing AR15's for the public since they are being undercut by lower priced rifles that are equal to Colt's quality while remaining milspec. Colt announced that their line of AR15 rifles in all calibers will now be marketted for law-enforcement and military use. Colt will still manufacture parts and upper assemblies as replacement parts for rifles they already have sold as a matter of supporting customers that own their product. However, no more lower-receivers will be manufactured in configurations legal for citizens to own, aka. three-shot and full-auto select fire only. What you may have heard was this fact convoluted and twisted into something more than it really is.

A good freind of mine is a gun dealer and was talking to a firearms distributor and importer who he is friends with one of the reps. Supposedly Colt was going to get out of the handgun business and quit selling firearms to civilians because of recent court trials regaurding people being able to sue gun manufacters for those who used that gun on them. This was supposed to be anounced today but like you say I have heard nothing as well so maybe they have reconsidered but I do know they were going to and may still. I hope they don't because it will just add fuel to the gun banners cause. I know Kel-Tec is being sued because an idiot shot someone and a bigger idiot decided to blame the gun company instead of the shooter.

In regard to Colt throwing in the towel. I beleive the story got its origins from U.S. News And World Report. I believe, based on the article that Colt is considering stopping production of Handguns only , Nothing was directly addressed regarding AR-15 production for the public. LE and Military production will continue. Colt has apparently bought out SACO Co. as well.

Check out www.garynorth.com (http://www.garynorth.com) he made a comment about this and the link to US News and World Report is there. Go to Comments / forums then Main categories, then its under personal preparations.

*Sigh...* There's a hard time getting ANYTHING right now, unless youre in the market for a Bryco, Jennings, or Lorcin. There's a rush on to purchase firearms of just about any sort these days. It's hard to get many of the popular Glock models. Not because Glock is going out of the business, but because they have such demand for their products. I had to go to three different gunshops before I could find a dealer whose distributors had the make and model Ruger I was looking for. Again, not because Ruger is out of the gun business, but because the Rugers are in hot demand right now. Everything is feeling the pressure of increased demand for firearms. The thing is, the company's learned their lesson from the assault weapons ban rush and are not hiring additional staff or shifts to make firearms, knowing it's all gonna drop off after 1/1/2000. Therefore they're making due with what staff and resources they have today. So demand is simply out-stripping supply. As for Colt pistols being gone, I doubt that. The piddley little gunshow that was held last weekend in my home-town was flooded with Colts of ever make and type. Tons of Glocks, Springfield Armory, Kimber, Ruger, Taurus, Beretta... you name it. And the prices were going-rate, not 'Last chance to buy a Colt' sort of thing. Instead of posting here, why not write Colt and ask them yourselves directly instead of relying on hearsay???

Oh, by the way. Gun dealers LOVE these sorts of rumors. Nothing like panic-buying to raise the profit margins for that week or month. Would you trust a car salesman saying that this is your last chance to buy a car? Don't do a 'chicken little,' look around at what is happening. No media reports gloating over the close of Colt. Colt's still in the counters at gunshops and at gunshows. No official announcement by Colt on their website. Nobody tauting "Last Chance to Buy a Colt" in Shotgun News. No NRA announcements. No GOA announcements. All we have is one magazine article and a bunch of rumors. Sheesh!
