I heard over at www.thehighroad.com (The Firing Line's successor) that Federal was going to roll out 7.5x55 ammo commercially. Anyone know about this? I tried calling the Federal product line department and got their recorder. That may make the difference between me buying two K-31's and no K-31's.

You can email Federal at prodserv@federalcartridge.com to find an answer to your question on 7.5x55mm ammunition.

It shouldn't; the accuracy and build quality of the K-31s are beyond description.

Swiss surplus GP11 7.5x55 is around in quantity, as is the INDEP 7.5x55 imported from Portugal (though much more expensive).

Norma manufactures 7.5x55 reloading supplies, and that data is abundant.

I contacted Federal about this.

Their reply was...

"Sorry, we do not have plans for that load at this time."

Thanks for the reply. When the Federal customer service called me back, that was what they told me. Someone on the High Road.com said that they had seen an ad, in a recent Shotgun News edition, that showed Federal was selling that round. Maybe they misread the ad and it really said 6.5x55, which they do make.

here is my advice, take it for what it is worth....buy as much of the GP11 ammo you can get your hands on, the prices are not going to go down....switerland is not like a third world country like most of east europe or russia, they don't need to make and sell ammo to put money in their treasury....and I doubt very, very seriously, that when the surplus stuff runs out, they are going to gear up production for a obsolete ammo because they need the money.

think about it.....

unlike nagant revolvers where you can swap out cylinders to fire .32 instead of the more expensive 7.62 NAGANT rounds, you can't do that to a rifle.

The Swiss will probably make the 7.5 Swiss GP-11 round for as long as they have a military. The round is so steeped in the tradition of their arms industry, there's nothing to comprare it to.

They also still build their belt fed machineguns to run this caliber right now. Just like we use 7.62 Nato with the M60 and Mag58's etc. as a support weapon the 7.5 Swiss is still used and probably will be until the Swiss no longer have a military capability.

From talking to Swiss friends they decomissioning of all the STG57's is going to increase rapidly. All are planned to be phased out by I think I remember 2010. There will be MORE GP-11 coming in. Will it get cheaper, probably not to any significant degree. AIM's price on it is the best in the US, I advice all to purchase their 7.5 Swiss there. I do!

Were all StG57s select-fire or were a certain percentage semi-auto only? (And were they included in the '89 and subsequent '94 ban?)

(chanting) C&R, C&R, C&R, C&R, C&R, C&R!

All Stgw.57s were select-fire. When they leave military service, assuming the retiring soldier elects to keep their rifle, they are converted to semi-automatic.

GP11 ammo production has ceased. So there is only a finite quantity left. In addition, they Swiss pay about the same price as we're paying now for GP11, so I doubt we'll ever see much in the way of cheaper GP11.
