We went out to my friends farm today to do some shooting, and I picked up some Remington Subsonic ammo just for fun, and to see how loud it is. I was amazed how quiet it was, I was expecting something as loud as a hammer hitting a nail, but all you could hear was the bolt slamming back home. That was the other amazing thing, it was able to cycle in my Marlin mod 60.
Just thought I would share.

Maybe I need to REALLY clean my model 60 or something?!?!
I haven't shot it that much for that exact problem, it won't reliably cycle the Remington or Aguila subsonic loads. I might cycle two or three, then have one hang in the gate. I tried Winchester Dynapoints for the first time today and was quite impressed with the way they shot in the 60, and didn't make that much more noise than the Remington Subs.

Yeah, before we went shooting today, I took it all apart and cleaned and lubed it up.

Well, I shoul dmention something I forgot to earlier. Sorry, but being the dumbass that I am, i forgot to take my earplugs out hwen I tried the SS.22 stuff. When I went home to clean my guns I was showing my dad the silent stuff and well, without earplugs it isn't so silent. It is quieter than the high velocity stuff though. Sorry if I got peoples hopes or anything.

When I first tried "subsonics" I was disappointed too. I thought they would be quieter than they were. I later found out that many of the ammo marketed as "target" grade ammo is subsonic as well. Many good shooters claim that the transition from supersonic to subsonic as the bullet is flying downrange has a tendency to affect accuracy. I suppose it's true but I don't have a steady enough hand nor the equipment to really try it out myself.
I seem to get my best accuracy out of "standard" (high) velocity ammo myself. Target stuff has never grouped as well for me. |

Fuzbuster, If you really wanna see quiet try Aguila Super Colibris. Won't cycle a semi-auto, but great for backyard can popping. Its a 20gr conical bullet, without any gun powder (except primer). The Super Colibri has enough power to take a squirrel off the bird feeder @ 10-15 yards, and the only noise is a click and whoosh sound in a rifle. Velocity is like 550 fps. In a 5 inch barrel revolver you still won't hear much more than that.

Try some PMC Moderator. My Biathlon Basic loves the stuff. It will one hole with it at 25yds but they open up to around 5/8" at 50. But, it's the most accurate, quiet subsonic I've found to date. I believe my last brick cost around $20. Regards,
Paul

Aguila Super Colibris and Aguila Colibris, make the same amount of sound as a cap gun or a little louder cap gun.

For accuracy and silence, I prefer the CCI CB Longs. They won't cycle as the Subsonics,Moderators,Aguila SE, Dynapoints and other fullsize subsonics will, but they are a good bit quieter and are much more accurate than the Aguila offerings. They also offer a little more bullet weight and power than the Super Colibris.
