My wife was formerly a 1911 shooter. Last year she had shoulder surgery and can no longer handle the 1911. She now has a Ruger .22 semi-auto.
Any recommendations on ammo for self-defense? 60-grain? 30-grain? 40-grain? Hollow-point? I intend to test several brands against a thick stack of catalogs, but I'd appreciate any ideas as well. I'll report the results of the tests.

Well a 22 is more destructive to the human body then a large caliber bullet. It is that whole bouncing around thing that really tears up the body. Now the .22 does not have the stopping power that a .45 has but it will kill them just the same. The .60 grain is a little heavy and will not have the explosive velocity that the others have. Test the ammo and find one that functions flawless in her gun.

For .22lr, the best bet is to use a solid round nose for maximum penetration to the vitals. Expansion of existing .22 hollow points won't be useful in humans,as it doesn't penetrate enough to to get to the vitals in a torso hit. For a headshot, even LRN .22lr is a marginal penetrator.
That said, try both. Be sure to test it on a hard medium such as bones or wood. That's where the HP's usually fail.
