MD has similar hunting laws. For deer the rifle can't hold more than 8 rounds, for game using shotguns, the shotgun can't hold more than 3 rounds (1 in chamber, two in mag), and handguns no more than 6 rounds. The catch to using a detachable mag is that the gun is still considered loaded if there are rounds in the mag even if the mag isn't in the rifle. A DNR officer told me that this can cause problems for the shooter if he turns out to be a smart ass towards the officer; if the hunter is polite, the DNR officer doesn't usually check the mag; he will check only to see if it is not in the gun. Moral of story: be polite (and be legal).
I'm betting the .357 Mag. is pretty much worthless as a hunting cartridge in the state of Colorado for two reasons in reference to centerfire rifles.
d. Must use expanding bullets that weigh minimum 70 grains
for deer, pronghorn and bear, 85 grains for elk and moose,
and have an impact energy (at 100 yards) of 1,000-ft. pounds
as rated by manufacturer.
e. It is illegal to hunt game birds, small-game mammals or
furbearers with a centerfire rifle larger than .23 caliber during
regular rifle deer and elk seasons west of I-25, without an
unfilled deer or elk license for the season. A small-game,
furbearer or unfilled big-game license is required.
