New carry ammo for my .40

So I've been using the same ammo in my car gun for a couple years now and figure it's time to swap it out for fresh stuff. what's out there and cheap? Cheaper than dirt has bulk pack federal 180 grn hst for $153/500 which seems like the front runner, what else is out there at the moment?

I haven't priced 40 since I don't have one. In 45 acp, 9 mm, 38 spc, no one can touch wally worlds price.

I figured I'd check there tomorrow, but I doubt it will be under $15 a box

I like gold dot, power ball, or a hand loaded HLC

I have shot hundreds if not thousands of 180gr HS they have issues opening up....

HST's are different, they have a very big hollow point and lack the post.

In 9 mm I use Gold Dots. I know you're looking for 40 s&w but if it's good in 9 it should be better in .40.

I have tried Golden Saber, Hydra Shocks, and Gold Dots. All are pretty effective against a couple of taped phone books.

    9mm - Speer GDHP 124gr. +P
    .40s&w - Winchester 180gr. Ranger SXT JHP
    .45acp - Winchester 185gr. Silver-Tip JHP

Gold Dot 180 JHP. I really don't think you can do any better.

No offense, and I can appreciate trying to stick within a budget...

But as a vehicle carry gun, if this is a weapon intended to defend your life with if needed... why go cheap on the ammo? Its not like you need to buy a case of the stuff. Even if it was $50 bucks a box... swap it out every 6 months.

I keep my G21-SF 45 loaded with genuine Black Talons (yeah the ammo is 10+ years old, but shoots just fine)... I think the new label is Ranger SXT.

My ammo acutally has a black moly coating on the bullet... if I can find someone to pull the bullets and reload them with fresh powder and primers.. that's my next goal.

Kinda like buying a motorcycle... you buy a brand new crotch rocket and then go cheap on a helmet? If you have a $50 melon, buy a $50 helmet... I wear a Shoei Helmet that's about $200 bucks.

no offense to raxar or marks $200 head, but i agree with this. ^^^^^

i go with hydrashocks and ranger.

you could always test them. heres what i hear (although i never really cared enough to try to test any bullets), most testers use wet phone books, and produce picture perfect mushrooms, but from ppl who have acually recovered bullets from game, they have said to shoot DRY phone books, they are more abrasive and tend to simulate flesh better.

because I honestly think that between all the name brand hollow points they're all going to work about the same. A handgun is a terrible choice for a stopper regardless of caliber or bullet (except perhaps a .500 or a .45/70). As long as the ammo works reliably and hits where I want it to I'm not going to sweat it. I also know that cheap hollow points can reliably expand, case in point I sill have about a case of brownbear 145 grn 9mm's that work awesome in my p95 and expand very well (yes I tested them, and I've never recovered a bullet that wasn't expanded) Not that I'm going to go out looking for a rusky hollow point (never seen one in .40 anyway).

I am familar with the box o truth. Granted I haven't read it in a while but I don't remember them having any issues with any of the name brand HP's other than hydrashock getting clogged in heavy clothing (though I happen to disagree with a texan's idea of "heavy clothing")
