S&W 4506-1 I'm playing with one... It's OK, But not really impressed.

    What do you guys think?

Fits the hand good, but the trigger is not nearly as nice as my usual Sig 226. It holds a LOT fewer rounds. Yea, I know they are bigger, but still a LOT fewer.

I think the smith semiauto pistols deserve the rep they have. The are serviceable but no where near top of the line IMO.

I always liked the revolvers, but never really looked at the S&W semis. I expected a better trigger pull. The two stage single action is rougher than the VERY long double.

eh, I used to have a 1066 that I was never really in love with. Smith's DA/SA triggerpull is horrible. If I was going with a single stack I'd go 1911

+1, the only exception would be their DAO's they did a very good job on their trigger system.

IMO The revolvers are top notch, their semi's not so much...

Aren't the new M&P pistols supposed to be good?

Of course. I just hate to see them go unmentioned in a thread about poor quality S&W autos. The SW99 series was good too IMO, except they only made the slides, I think.

I wouldn't say that the metal guns are poor quality, they're actually very well built, the issue is with the design. I love my 4046, but as I said it's DAO, which gets rid of one of the biggest issues with the design

Never been a fan of the 59XX series of autos from S&W. Even though I've owned a half dozen or so in the past two decades!

For one, their trigger pull is about 1/4" too long at release, and, their size is just too large in today's world. I've had two 4506s from back in the day. One with Novak rears, the other with the large "winged" rear sights... Good shooters, just hated the trigger release and mag safeties...

Now, I have a M&P9 that I would not ever part with. It's even passed up my SIG P220 as my favorite handgun!!!! It's my primary competition pistol too, with a 4lb Apex trigger sear, and fiber optic front sight.
