Want to get my son a good knife for his birthday.

He like any other 12 year old (going on 13) is into knives. He does have a bunch of cheap/flea market knives. Would like to get him a good one. We did find him a butterfly knife that cost only 3 bucks at a flea market. He got pretty good with it. But then traded it off as he and his friends like to do. So, question is. I would like to buy him a decent butterfly knife for his birthday. Any ideas? Suggestions?

Here are some entry level models that I feel would hold up fairly well.

I've got most of these if you really want to give him a quality balisong but you're looking at a lot higher price.

Thanks Richard. I was thinking about the 100.00 range. I don't want to go too cheap. But then again, like most kids his age. Likes to lose and or trade things. I appreciate the links, and will look further into them.

Not sure if you ever bought from cold steel. I have a few of there products and have always been happy with them. Always been a good bang for the buck.

When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, and he looks you crooked in the eye and he asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" "Yessir, the check is in the mail." ----- Jack Burton 1986

I'm a big fan of Spyderco and Kershaw, but they don't (currently) make any butterfly knives. Last I looked decent mid range butterfly knives were hard to find.

Not sure if you can find these now as I believe they are all out of production but the Bradley Kimura series are a great value. Forgot I have some of these. They sold a few years ago for under $100. They have stainless steel handles so they are a little heavier than some but they flip great and are rock solid. IIRC Kershaw made them for Bradley. This link shows the different models. You might be able to find one on Ebay.

Here one of mine so you can see what they look like.

Just for the heck of it here is one of the three new Benchmade models I have. More spendy for sure but Stan could use and enjoy it for life.

It is really going to be hard to find a good/decent butterfly knife for around $100.00.
I have the Benchmade Model 42 http://www.benchmade.com/products/42 which has been discontinued and it is fine knife. I use it for only light duty stuff like opening boxes and the like. It took me almost 30 years to finally buy a really good one.

My latest knife purchase is the http://www.benchmade.com/products/586. This one is my EDC.

I ordered him a Bear and Son. (His nick name is Bear.) Thanks for the input! I am hesitant to order him something expensive. As he does lose things. A good friend of ours gave him the Gerber Multi tool that he had carried in Afghanistan. Our friend even had it engraved with his rank and my Son's name. Stan wants to take it on all of his Scout trips. But that is was too valuable of a gift for him to lose. Thanks again. If Son enjoys this and keeps it for awhile. Then maybe will spend the money to get him something better quality. Thanks again!
