I think it comes down to one simple thing. They want optics on their rifles. They've seen the sharp increase in U.S. hit percentage as we've fielded more and more optics and they feel an overpowering need to keep up.
US Constitution: Article 1 Section 8 Paragraph 4
The Congress shall have Power To establish an uniform Rule of Naturalization
They might replace the AK in Russia, but I am guessing that AKs will never be out of favor in countries that currently make them at the street corner rug stores.
Don't forget Venezuela has now the production factories for there AK-103's. The only sales the Russians have had over the last 15 years or so has been with Venezuela, and they practically gave them the AK-103's, plus a license to produce them in Venezuela.

The AKs won't be done until all the 7.62 and 5.45 is dried up.
"I'm fucking furious, I'm violently angry, and I like it. If you don't know what that feels like then I feel bad for you"
AK with the Beryl top cover thing gets the job done for optics. No need to abandon a cheap to build, robust easy to maintain weapon like the AK.
The next weapon will probably be based on the same platform as the AK, we'll see.
yep, BIGGEST issue with Ak's is the lack of Co-Witness Optics. Most times you gotta bob your head like a pigeon to switch between your sights and whatever oversized abomination is on your rail mount.
That and adding 6-8" more inches to the sight radius would do wonders.

SHADILAY, SHADILAY!
It's only a matter of time when Venezuela's Chavez sends AKs to the Mexican drug lords and into the US to raise Hell among us..
I'm guessing they'll be switching over to the M16.
.....so many purists finally "aware" that up-grading is practical and fun !
Nothing but the finest weapon construction and parts used !
As technology marches on, American citizens will be prohibited from acquiring the newest guntech. I predict the Ak and AR platform will have real staying power as both are well entrenched with American gunowners and lets face it, dead is dead and the Ak is a great weapon for private ministers of death...

Part of the problem with the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed is due to the failure to see into a future of A-10s, Cobra Gunships, M1A1 Abrams, USS "Anycarrier" and the atomic bomb not to mention all the other so-called modern weapons.
Dead is dead, it just is that a super atomic bomb is more efficient per number killed than any hand held weapon.
Sad isn't it that we have devised such wonderful weapons!
I love AKs, but the lack of low-profile optic abilities, antiquated magazine catch, antiquated safety/selector switch, and lack of bolt hold open device, make a more modern design desirable. I know some of you are loyalists, but realists know that good ergonomics and fast mag changes go a long way in making a better rifleman...

WTF?
What's up my nigga's
The AK-47 and AK-74 are going to be with us for a very long time. They are both just too good a weapon design for rugged, low-tech use.
The Russians will upgrade for their special forces and such but they'll be using the AK-74 for a long time to come. Just no real need to switch over when they've got millions of them stockpiled with mags and along with trillions of rounds of ammo for them. They'd be smarter to just develop a good add-on optic for them if that's the need.
Personally, I think opitcs are a cop-out. A replacement for good training. I'm talking about for the mbr - not squad marksmen or snipers of course.
