I think it comes down to one simple thing. They want optics on their rifles. They've seen the sharp increase in U.S. hit percentage as we've fielded more and more optics and they feel an overpowering need to keep up.

They might replace the AK in Russia, but I am guessing that AKs will never be out of favor in countries that currently make them at the street corner rug stores.

Don't forget Venezuela has now the production factories for there AK-103's. The only sales the Russians have had over the last 15 years or so has been with Venezuela, and they practically gave them the AK-103's, plus a license to produce them in Venezuela.

The AKs won't be done until all the 7.62 and 5.45 is dried up.

AK with the Beryl top cover thing gets the job done for optics. No need to abandon a cheap to build, robust easy to maintain weapon like the AK.

As technology marches on, American citizens will be prohibited from acquiring the newest guntech. I predict the Ak and AR platform will have real staying power as both are well entrenched with American gunowners and lets face it, dead is dead and the Ak is a great weapon for private ministers of death...
