I'm building a hunting rifle from my Bubba'ed Mosin.
I did some research on Mosin scope mounts, and almost all left something to be desired, or are more than I want to pay, so I decided to design my own. Material cost was whopping $3 since I had everything on hand except the paint.
I made a bent bolt from an AK piston shaft, which is the exact same diameter as the original. Cost for making the bolt.........ZERO$$$!!!!!
I saw that the rear sight base makes a great anchoring point for the front of the mount. I removed the leaf and measured inside the base. It is a couple thousandths more than a half inch. Looking around my work room, I found a length of 1/2" square tubing. I set a piece atop the receiver and into the RSB. Perfect except that the bottom of the tubing is above the bottom of the RSB. I then put a short piece of tubing vertically and marked the correct length. With this done, I welded the two together and everything fit perfectly. With the mount in place, the location of the RSB hole for the leaf sight , marked and drilled.
Now to get bolt clearance. I stopped the tubing short of where the bolt handle is when closed, and welded a cap on that end of the mount. I then determined where the best place to drill holes in the receiver to secure the mount on that end. Being sure the screws would not interfere with the bolt and not drilling into the barrel. Drilled, tapped, and mounted the base.
Next I set a Weaver mount on top of the tubing, marked and drilled the holes and tapped the tubing with a 8-32 tap. With everything together, I installed the scope and bore sighted. Somewhat to my amazement, the scope only needed a few clicks of windage and elevation to get on target. All that's left to do is disassemble and clean up the welds and paint.
Now when I get a chance, I'll see how how she shoots.
