    I need a monster gun!

Today I realized, out of all the guns I have for various different roles, I don't have big medicine to put down monsters! (Take your pick, just anything big and nasty!) I don't have anything more potent then a .308 or 12ga.

Sadly, I am most definitely on a budget.

I'm kinda thinking a 45-70 levergun might fit the bill though

    So, any thoughts?

    Graboid hunting are we?

I thought the best way to get those was with an RC car and dynamite.

    Marlin 1895 Cowboy

It's chambered in .45-70 and can handle everything from mild trapdoor loads up to Garrett or Buffalo Bore loads. And the Cowboy model offers good balance & mass to handle the heavier loads in it's factory configuration. Just my $0.02.

What do you think you are going to run into that is so big and bad that a .308 or 12 gauge will not take it down? Seriously you are already set up for big and bad because I know your marksmanship is up to well placed shots. Truth is you just want another gun don't you?

If you want a tried and true thumper with some range to it look for a used Ruger M77, Browning A bolt or Winchester M70 in .338 mag. Most weren't fired all that much unless the guy was a serious long range shooter and reloader. Those I have seen on the range get taken out of the closet once a year just before deer season, a couple of rounds fired then put away till the start of the next deer season.

About $2.50 everytime you pull the trigger but once you have the brass you can load it yourself and you can load down for easy shooting and up for T-Rex.

Monsters huh, well then forget .45-70, what a pussy round. You need a .50 BMG upper for an AR lower. True they're only single shots but now you have engine block crushing power for a T-Rex, to the already mentioned Graboid!

You know how ya watch a movie or something, and they always come up with something that 'normal' guns just don't work very well on? Hrm... let me quote 'Monster Hunter International"

    ... I don't really have a 'big gun'.

if 45/70 isn't a big enough levergun you could get it rechambered to 50/110

If you're seriously in the market for a "Monster Killer" then look no further than the 10mm.

It's been unofficially linked to global warming (muzzle flash) and sun spots (poor backstop). Rumor is that it was considered as the armament of choice for drones in Afghanistan but the Army went with the Hellfire missle system to avoid collateral damage.

cevulirn, on a slightly more serious note, you might also consider the Weatherby Vanguard Series 2 (pictured above). These are chambered up to .338 Win. Mag. and can be found for just under $600 NIB. Probably the best value in a bolt action rifle today.

You can build a black powder 42MM high velocity gun that uses Saboted rounds for under $500. Just need a truck to haul it around in.

    or buy a 10/22

One good thing about the .50 single shot is that even if you miss, the flash will blind it and sonic boom will shatter its eardrums. Instant Helen Keller...

Marlin 45-70 is a great choice. Big enough for cape buffalo and brown bear, yet can be loaded with light or factory standard loads for fun plinking.

    I have two myself...
