If Florida law is anything like Texas', any person (LEO or not) may use whatever force is reasonably necessary, including deadly force, to prevent immediate seriously bodily injury or death to themselves or another person. I'd say that having 75% of your face eaten constitutes serious bodily injury.

UPDATE, 5/27: While Miami Police remain tight-lipped about the incident, investigators are asking witnesses to contact authorities. The Herald reports detectives believe the victim may have been homeless and the naked man suffering from "cocaine psychosis," which could have prompted him to remove his clothing.

Now, the crazies come out to defend the "Miami Zombie."

His girlfriend describes him as "sweet and well-mannered." He carried a Bible with him, everywhere.

She blames his actions on being "drugged unknowingly" or on a "voodou curse."

His momma claims he was a good boy, but police had to come to her house and taze him to stop him from killing her in 2004, and he had an arrest record for drugs.

Yup, he was a fine, upstanding citizen.
