    AR Build Technical/Legal Question

I have a bare lower, can I get it registered as a handgun receiver?

My plan is to ultimately go the SBR route with 10.5" or 11.5" barrel.

Is that too long for a pistol configuration?

Or, maybe I should just get a can?

it will be whatever you build it as first.

BUT , IF you have the parts you can swap back and forth between pistol config or rifle ( if you had a 16" barrel for that part. )

Long as the buffer tube cant readily accept a buttstock it's in pistol configuration no matter how long your barrel.
IF you achieve * 26" overall* in pistol config you can add a forward grip

I'm not going to bother to look that up but there's something not seeming quite right about putting a forward grip on a pistol just because it goes 26" in length.

10 and 11.5" is not too long for a pistol config. I think there is something about a pistol receiver being marked as such to prevent illegal SBRing one. If you want to SBR, just do the paper work and be done with it. Wait to assemble until you get the stamp back. On a suppressor, I think most draw the line at 10" barrels, nothing shorter. Just remember, the round is filled with slow burning rifle powder. The shorter the barrel the more burned in the air powder, bigger muzzle blast and slower bullet speed.

Atf ruling a few months back,, puts it in the same category as a pistol grip shotgun.

IIRC only a few states mandate it AND IF you're the manufacturer selling them outright as a pistol receiver.
