I am hopeing to pick up an original used surplus german one in flecktarn. I just don't see how repros, or commercial versions are better than original german military.....

Not having one in hand, these look like they are an attachment to or worn over the load bearing harness above the butt pack meant to be a drop pack... Nice system, but designed as a system...

Bringing this back to life to say that I used this flectarn german military surplus 65l pack last july in Utah in Deaths Hollow......and it sucked. All the weight was on my shoulders, none on my waiste of lower back. ALL of it on my shoulders. Sold it off, tried a marine corp surplus ILBE, have ended up GOING WITH THE molle II. Really think the MOLLE II will be better, as it has more hip and waist support.

Just do not recommend one of the above german bags. Aparently german men are all like arnold, and I must just be weak. Because I like NOT HAVING SHOULDER PAIN ON A HIKE......

Even with back problems I'm still carrying my 5.11...

I missed this thread, otherwise I would have told you they don't have much of a waistbelt. Certainly not one that will bear a load. Better to go with a commercial pack since they are built for comfort.

they also have a smaller "day pack" i have both.

the construction quality (i can find problems anywhere) i would say is about 90%, whereas most milsurp ones seem to be about 50% or so. the price is near the very bottom range of anything ive gotten (especially the $20 day pack). there is a special pocket for a hydration bladder, with a hole on either side for the tube that, when not in use, is covered up. special sunglasses compartment up top. and so many interior pockets and divisions that im never tearing half of my shit out to find a certain item that got lost in the pile. it also has the molle attachment points on the outside, if u care about that kind of shit. they both have sternum straps on the shoulder straps, and the shoulder straps have qr buckles, so they can be switched side to side for a "sling" style bag (not into that shit either, but seems to be a rage lately) the larger one has a hip belt as well, and, while the smaller one dosent, it does have a buckle on either side that you could attach a hip belt strap, if needed.

no, im not getting paid by them, im just that happy to be able to end my long and expensive backpack buying spree.
+1 For the Fieldline pack. I have the big one and the day pack, and they get used weekly. I did have one of the plastic strap buckles break on me a while back. I just tied it back up with 550 cord.

I have one similar to that. Don't know if mine is a milsurp or not but it held-up to a BoyScout 100mile trek at Philmont = up and down the mountains with 50+ pounds of gear the whole time. The one thing that did go wrong were the fasteners for the shoulder straps - which got a lot of abuse. I simply replaced them with some replacement US milsurp fastex fasteners and I'm still using it.

Now, I will say that for the same or even less money, you can get an ILBE Marin pack - MARPAT camo. Just go to ebay and do a search for ILBE Marine Pack and you'll get all kinds of them. I have one of these too and it's excellent. Be sure to get one with the top pack included - as well as the waste strap gear.
