Why such controversy and tabu over 5.45 pistols?

Thompson Center has pistols in many different rifle calibers. AR15 pistols, etc...etc... the amount of surplus that is already here, Hornady making commecial ammo. Why such tabu to even discuss a 5.45 pistol?

The cheap steel core surplus ammo would be banned by the BATF&SometimesEandreallybigfires as armor/bullet proof vest penetrating ammo.

    Welcome to the board!!!

Said more simply. There is a law passed to prevent body armor piercing handgun ammo from being sold to the public. Any bullet that has more than 50% of the core made of a metal harder than lead and can be fired in a handgun = instant Armor Piercing Handgun Ammo. Olympic Arms made their AR15 pistols chambered in 7.62x39 and submitted a prototype to BATFE back in 1993. In less than 6 months BATFE sent out a letter telling all dealers to immediately upon reading the letter, stop selling steel cored Chinese or other coutries ammo to civilians. The penalty is $10,000 per count and up to 10 years in jail if convicted.

If you like the sruplus 5.45x39 ammo and the AK74 rifles that use it, pray that some dub-ass doesn't market a 5.45x39 pistol. Becaue if they do then it will be only NEW fully lead core ammo for sale in the US.

Then Hornady, Remington, Winchester etc... would have a new caliber to market with a wide variety of bullet choices. Truth be known the Great "Oz" will more than likely ban the further importation of foreign made ammunition under the guise of the UN small arms treaty and we will be left with only US manufactured components anyway.

There is truth in what you said - holding ourselves back, for fear of rocking the boat, has never proven to work out well.

I wonder - if no one had ever gone full throttle after the ass ban sunset and started knocking out AK pistols and the like, think we would still have Mr bigears gunnin for an awb? Of course we would (IMO) which is why I believe in doing wtvr (legal action) you want.

That said, losing steel core 5.45 would suck because (afaik) that is the only configuration in which that round has any potency. Then again, that's just what I've hear, I've never used it. It's always been 7.62 or 5.56 for me
