Taking paint off the wood stock on a psl

    Hi everyone,

Always wanted one of these types of guns, I'm deployed overseas right now and the sad events in sandy hook, accelerated me to get one soon. My brother helped me get one from gunbroker. I thought it was a synthetic stock, my brother tells it has some reddish looking wood when he pulled off the dust cover. I assume its been spray painted, is there any way to take off the paint and manage to keep that color stain?

Should be Shellac not paint though I suppose it is possible it could be paint. If it's shellac it has color in it and to remove it will probably remove the majority of the color. Citri Strip paint remover will take off clear finishes and paint but not change the wood color, it doesn't bleech.

It looks all black, is that the case? If so it probably has been painted. They are usually an orange color, the Shellac I was speaking of. Denatured alcohol will dissolve Shellac btw.

Sorry for not being clear on being all black, I've been sick the last few days, yes that's why I thought it was synthetic. I'll call my brother later today and ask about it.
Thanks for the suggestions and help on this Schuetzenman.

    Update:
I found out the furniture has been dura-coated, I've been looking how to take that stuff off, but only been able to find on how to remove it from metal not wood.

I hope there's a easy way to do it.

Dura-coat isn't a wood finish, that is why there isn't much info...

If it was applied over the shellac with little or no prep and sanding it might come off easy. Wish I had advise...

The worst that could happen is you could buy www.Ironwooddesigns.com stock set...

Thanks for the reply El Laton, I really have no idea why they would be putting dura-coat on furniture... unless it was really ugly to them.

To cheaply weatherproof it and/or half-ass camo it.

Found out whoever had this in the past took the finish off and applied Dura-coat to the wood, I looked at Ironwoods design and didnt find what I want there, I went to rhineland arms and bought the Tiger Maple SVD kit for it, I'm thinking about using a dark cherry stain on it.

Thanks for all the help guys, I appreciate it.

Got the new stock in, it's been test fitted, the gas tube is still being worked on, and will have stains tested on the sample piece, it looks cool so far

    Nice rifle!

I prefer to keep mine looking like a PSL, but I definitely dig on your scope. I need a POSP 8x too. And maybe an RSA adjustable trigger.
