    Windows 8 ????????????

I just got a new Dell puter w/Windows 8 installed.

    Houston, I have a problem!
There is NO system sounds working. I have checked everything and researched Microsoft for a solution. I can go into "SOUNDS" in the control panel and set the sounds I want, and they work there when tested. After CP is closed, again, NOTHING.
I'm pissed because incoming emails are not noticed right away. Some emails require a fast reply.

Has anyone else here been crazy enough to have Windows 8 and have this problem?

Sorry slam...my rule of thumb is no winblows before its time...generally around service pack 3...which is why I build my own and still run XP 64bit.

Make sure you don't have software mute turned on. Most of those packaged systems come with keyboard shortcuts which are easy to accidentally trigger. See if there is a speaker icon on any of your keyboard keys, like maybe in small blue print or something along the top row. Try pressing Fn (Function) then that blue key and see if it toggles your sound back on.

Otherwise, from the Start Menu go into Desktop then click the sound icon in the system tray (lower right-hand corner) and make sure none of your mixer settings are muted or turned down real low.

If none of that works, might be time to uninstall Windows 8 and revert back to Windows 7.

As of oligarchy so of tyranny, the end is wealth; (for by wealth only can the tyrant maintain either his guard or his luxury). Both mistrust the people, and therefore deprive them of their arms." -- Aristotle, Book V, 350 B.C.E

    Been there done all that.
According to Microsoft's forums, the sound files were never included in 8.

My old computer had XP Pro. I swapped back to the XP one for the time being until MS has a patch or more service packs with a fix.

Slamfire51, I had a new Dell desktop unit delivered last week. It has Windows 8. No issue with the speakers. You can check your speaker setting just by clicking on the 'Settings' charm. It should tell you the % setting it has been set to. One basic idea is to make sure your speakers are plugged into the correct jack. Mine is a green jack just above the monitor connection.

    After today, it's all historical.

Mine has red, green, and blue jacks just below the monitor connection.
My speakers are in the green.

I did the settings thingy. Set a 100%. Made no difference.

    Are your system sounds working?

Put Windows 7 pro on it and you'll be fine. Every other Micorshaft product is shit, 8 is that. I would not buy a computer of any type that had ONLY Win 8 installed on it. Even if it worked well I still would not like it as they have it set up for touch screen like a smart phone. I do NOT want to have to poke and swipe at my desktop monitor to move from window to window. The touch thing works on a hand held device, but is shit on a monitor that sits over 1 to 2 feet away!
