what are you trying to accomplish? Reformatting a drive is easy, reinstalling an operating system and drivers slightly less so.

Exactly so. Have you Defragged the HD lately? That could speed things up if all you have is slow retrieval. OTOH if the drive is failing nothing is going to make it better.

Western Digital has a diagnostic program for their hard drives:

    http://support.wdc.com/product/downl...&sid=3&lang=en

This will test to see if your drive is bad or going bad.

Note that your problem could be either hardware or software. By "hardware" I mean your physical hard drive may be failing.

Or it could be software. Your drive could be perfectly fine, but your OS install is corrupted or maybe you have a virus or malware.

A re-format will solve a software problem, but it won't help one bit if the drive itself is failing.

Also, if you reformat, and if your PC BIOS supports it, enable "boot sector write protection" (or something similarly named) AFTER you've re-installed the OS.

This will prevent any virus from installing itself in the boot sector (where lots of the newer ones are placed).

You have to do this AFTER you re-install the OS because the OS installs a boot loader in the boot sector and obviously the install process needs access to write the boot sector.
