Ruger 10/22 variations

How many are there? I have the base model, blued/black metal with birch wood stock. I know they have offered at one time or another an "international" version with a mannlicher style full stock. I know they have some stainless steel models and a new take down model. Was just wondering that the different factory models are or have been and if anyone has pics of them all?

Also a quick question on after market mags. Which one work best in the 10/22? IIRC I've got one old and one new Butler Creek with plastic feed lips an they both work fine.

I think they offered a target model with a bull barrel, not for sure though. I have one of the birch/blue model, first gun I ever purchased. Got one of those butler creek 25rd mags, probally put many thousand rounds out of it. Still works like a champ.

Ruger has allied with Talo to make about a zillion variations. There are literally dozens of different stocks in laminated, hardwood and plastic. Different barrel lengths as well as standard steel and stainless.

Check the Ruger website to be blown away by the number of 10/22s they show, and that is only some of what are available if you know where to look.

As for magazines, Butler Creek are among the best, with the steel lips being almost unkillable. I too have used the Hot Lip mags and after a few thousand rounds finally wore one out. Ruger now makes, or has made for them, a steel lip mag which has gotten good revues.

Ruger makes FACTORY hi-cap 10/22 mags now. Called the BX-25.

I'd like a stainless take-down model with the threaded muzzle.

I have a Charger and have never fired it yet. I have a red dot scope on it and am not crazy about it.

Before I get around to shooting it, I'm going to change out that faggish looking stock and find a better scope for it.

The one thing I hate about the whole set up is that it doesn't come with factory installed iron sights. I wish they had an iron sighted version available when I bought mine.

I refuse to buy any new gun that doesn't have iron sights, or an easy way to install them.

Ruger currently lists the following 10/22 variations:

Takedown (2) - Stainless Steel (18.5")or Alloy Steel (16.62") standard barrel both with a black synthetic stock.

Carbine (4) - Stainless Steel or Alloy Steel standard barrel with either hardwood or black synthetic stock. One version offered with a LaserMax laser. All with 18.5" barrel

Target (2) - Alloy Steel barrel w/Brown Laminate stock or Stainless Steel barrel w/Black Laminate stock. Both with 20" bull barrel.

Compact (1) - Alloy Steel standard barrel (16.12" barrel) with hardwood stock.

Sporter (1) - Alloy Steel standard barrel (18.5" barrel) with American walnut stock.

Tactical (2) - Alloy Steel bull barrel (16.12") w/Black Hogue OverMolded stock or Alloy Steel standard barrel (16.12" w/flash suppressor) w/black synthetic stock.

Yep the steel feed lip Butlers or the BX-25 mags are probably the best from all reports.

The heavy barrel on the top rifle looks wavy. Is there some type of spiral fluting to the outside profile?

Bottom one looks like one of Davidsons exclusives.


For a rifle you can find used for $150 , I know folks who have tied up close to $10K in a single gun.

I have the stainless version of that rifle, and yes there is a spiral set of flats on the barrel giving it a fairly nice look. They are not deep but just enough to give a contrast.
