    Anybody listening to shortwave lately?

    I was told there was a preppers net on 3.818 lower side band Thurdays and Sundays at 9 pm eastern. Wonder if its any good?
    Are there some other good broadcasts on shortwave these days? I've been very inactive in my ham and shortwave lately.

    Radio ops re Ukraine;

    VHF
    30.025 loud OMs - Ignore the low mod Taxi YL from Moscow who is also on the qrg
    36.65 YL/OM one side so quiet its best listened to in SSB the other is normal
    The above may have Russian mil voice comms ongoing and you can hear them if the conditions are right. It would also help to understand the Russian language. If conditions are right it would pay to scan the low vhf band for comms such as these, most mils around the world use the same freq bands for the same types of operating units.

    HF
    All the following will be in USB unless noted

    4655.5 LSB (Active as of 0340z Mar 2)
    4662 (Active as of 0340z Mar 2)
    5412 (YL)
    5488 (Russian but didn't sound like military?)
    6945

    Russian AF;
    06685.0 Korsar (Russian Air Force 6985th Aviation Base Pskov )
    08131.0 O/M Russian--call missed) (prob TU-95)
    11360.0 Korsar (Russian Air Force 6985th Aviation Base Pskov )
    11360.0 Davlenie (Russian Air Force 6958th Aviation Base Taganrog)
    11360.0 Proselok (Russian Air Force 566th Military Transport Aviation Regiment Bryansk)

    Russian AF Bear H net;
    8162 CW
    The Bears have a USB voice comms hf freq net but I can't recall the qrgs right now.
    Russian AF qrgs;
    https://sites.google.com/site/russia...-the-air-force

    7963 CW - Strategic/Ground Forces
    6958 duplex of above sometimes used

    Russian Navy (all in cw, they use these codes to pass wx and position traffic;
    http://www.jcommops.org/soopip/doc/m...3/mg3_anx.html)
    03353,0
    06319,0 RIT (Rus Navy HQ Severomorsk)
    08345,2 RAL46 (Rus Navy HQ)
    12464,0 RAL46 (Rus Navy HQ)

    Example Russian Navy cw traffic codes;
    RSY73 DE RIW ZZD ?
    RSY73 DE RIW ZZD 1 _N ZETRIDEW _ZTXT RIZNE
    RSY73 DE RIW RPT K
    RSY73 DE RIW ZKM K
    RSY73 DE RIW AS 2 K

    Decoding the cw;
    RIW = NAVY HQ Moscow
    RSY73 = Unid Russian ship

    Message:
    RSY73 this is Moscow how do you read ?

    RSY73 this is Moscow I read you strength 1, followed possibly by code, but also possibly ZET (message is protected) RIDEW(code), ZTX (I’ll keep my station open till further notice)
    TRIZNE(code)

    RSY73 this is Moscow, repeat

    RSY73 this is Moscow I am ready for encrypted traffic

    RSY73 this is Moscow wait 2 minutes

    Russian RTTY/TOR bcasts;
    12596,0 RLK7: Archangelsk Radio RUS 1200 SITOR-B
    12877,5 UIW: Kaliningrad Radio RUS 1030 RTTY 50/170

    As to Shortwave voice broadcasts;
    Russia recently dropped shortwave broadcasting - it may pay to listen to its allies, such as Iran, China, Bulgaria, and even Egypt is much closer to Russia since 0bama supports the mobros in Egypt. Iran will likely have a good take on the Russian side of things and you can hear them during their daily propaganda "voice of justice" to the US broadcasts here;
    9710
    11770
    Starts at 0330Z and ends 0430Z or thereabouts. Of course all the "allies" have their swbc stas going full roar.

    As to Euro comms;
    There are currently 22 countries in the Partnership for Peace Programme
    http://www.nato.int/cps/en/natolive/topics_82584.htm
    They have exercises on hf and might become active in this "crisis".

    active Participants:
    - Belgium (BM10 = NCS, BM01,BM06,BM07,BM12)
    - Germany (DHO37,DHO78,DHJ42,DHJ83)
    - Romania (COPI)
    - Slovakia (SVK1,SVK2 )
    - Swiss (HBM46)
    - Poland (K7FP,K7FR)

    Frequencies logged so far (kHz/USB)

    4485.0
    4718.5
    5335.0
    5349.0
    6962.5
    6846.0 (Main)
    6783.0
    7478.5
    7859.0
    7937.0
    7939.0
    8007.0
    9292.0
    14499.0

    Most tfc was heard on 6846 and 6962.5 in the past.

    If you're interested in digital mode decoding you might try sorcerer, it's free, runs on a pc and uses the soundcard for input from your radio, or if you have a sdr radio it will take i/q inputs as well. See these links for the ware and some setup and operation instrctions;

    Now imagine what a "cirsis" like this could let the 0bamaregim get away with nationaly and internationaly?

    Key to hf reception;
    Low freqs at night, high freqs daytime. If both stations are in darkness or light there is a high probablility they can hear each other if the propagation is decent. From light into darkness or vice versa it only works for a short period just prior to and after sunrise/set. This means use the low freqs at night and don't expect to hear much on them in daylight. At night everyone is using the low freqs and signals are usualy fairly strong. For example I have heard the 11MHz Russain AF and Navy usb comms here in the miodwest well after dark and sometimes even a bit before but I wouldn't expect to hear them at 24MHz in the middle of the night unless ionoshperic conditions were spectacular. Russia has been in darkness for hours before the sun sets here. One propagation tool that is alway on is the RAF Volmet station on 11.253, a female robot reads weather for various airports around the world 24/7. If you can hear that well, propagation from Europe should be decent if not improving.

    This url has a large db on Russkii comms;
    http://johngaltfla.com/wordpress/201...ring-conflict/

    Pirate activities on 6685 (6685 is night primary freq for Russian AF by the way) khz last night (sunday night) with Russian accent English saying "please start attack on Ukraine now, Staline is alive" and so on. Seems everyone wants to get in on the drama. Dunno if this is a pro western/Ukraine operation or Russian. 6685 to 6995 is prime pirate broadcast territory. Also, NATO fired up an air defense digital mode (TADIL-A) on top of 6685 night primary Russian AF comms freq last night. My guess is Ukraine supporter here.

    More Ukraine related mil voice comms;
    4384U
    4397U
    4405U
    4916U
    4932.5L
    6903U (with PTT tones)
    6943U (with PTT tones)

    U=USB
    L=LSB

    Also for CONUS HAM ops related to patriotism there's a group on 3860 most every night in the mid west, and the liberty net is around 3950 or so.
    http://3950.net/

    When shtf you won't need to worry about what freq to use, you will be in the same boat as every other HAM and will find each other easily. Just remember that the enemy is listening.
