So what exactly does the U.S. have at stake in Ukraine?

I've been doing some Google searches to find out just why the hell this is such a big deal to us. I can't find any reason why our country should be even thinking about involvement in any way, shape, or form. Why not just sit it out and watch with a bowl of popcorn? This really isn't going to hurt us. Seems like a dick sizing competition to me.

People are worried about allowing imperialist expansion.

I'm personally more worried about western civilization's trend towards socialism.

It's none of our damned business if Hitler invade Poland and France. That's Europe's problem.

It's none of our business if the Japanese invade every country in the Pacific Rim.

We need to keep our noses outta that crap. Hitler and Hirohito are no threat to us.

    Right!

Russia has had mil bases in the area for ages. Ukraine was Russia untill Kruschev gave it autonomy. Kiev is where Russia got its birth. The fedz go and invade or cause regime change in multitudes of nations around the globe but Russia can't defend its interests on its own borders.

WW2 was the result of 20th century imperialism.

Neither the US or Japan had a right to Hawaii, and I'd say its pretty obvious that Europe asked for and deserved Hitler. I think they're lucky we helped them because IMO we never had an obligation to.

In the end all it was really about is defending our access to resources in the pacific and preserving European markets for future trade and for American investment in the rebuilding of Europe.

If we had been annihilated in the Cold War while continuing to follow our WW2 era policies of imperialism, would American's today continue to praise our past involvement in European affairs?

I'm proud of my forefathers kicking Nazi ass, but not every international disagreement needs to be compared to Hitler's invasion of Poland. (France should have intervened over Czechoslovakia anyway).

Seems to me that the US was at the forefront in convincing many of the eastern block countries to give up or dismantle their nuclear arsenals.

In order to do this we had to convince them that Russia wasn't going to reabsorb them.

That does put us on the hook.... to some degree at least

The funny part is people believe the Russians didn't control every nuke in their bloc.

Only in part. WWII was the continuation of a ruinous european civil war which had been put on hold in 1918 because both sides were exhausted.

Didn't the US promise to see to their security if they gave their nukes back to Russia?

Keeping your promises didn't matter to the grinnin' jackass from GA, and the black version of Jimmy Carter isn't any better!
