Fuck pull through sharpeners, they destroy your edge. I was looking for images that show that, and came across this page: http://sharpeningtechniques.blogspot...ves-after.html

For mobile sharpening I like this: http://www.amazon.com/Spyderco-Doubl.../dp/B001CWR2X8

These aren't as good, but you can fit them in your wallet (I have an extra fine in mine) and with a steady hand still make a knife sharper than most non-knife people are used to, not that means much.

This is the most bad assed finishing stone on the market, IMHO. I have a 2" wide version.

I've used a 3-stone oiled set-up for years. The first (and least used) is your typical gray carborundum brick, followed by a soft and hard "arkansas" stones. They are glued to a triangular wooden block and sit in a frame to hold them steady. I've used them on a variety of kitchen knives, hunting , and pocket knives.
One thing I've noticed is that, after using the "soft" stone to shape the edge up, I use the hard stone to put the "razor's edge" on knives. I've also found it best to make 1-2 passes in each direction, depending on blade length. Blades under 4 inches can be done in single strokes, flipping it over for each pass. It gives me an edge on a pocket knife to shave the hair off of my arm.
