Well as the guy said, rapid compression of air can cause it to combust. This happens in injection molding if the mold doesn't have proper vent channels cut into the parting line to let the air out as the plastic goes in. When it happens in molding you get a charred region on the plastic part and sometimes you also get a notch or groove in the part if enough air is trapped. If you can't get the air out you can't get the plastic in. So what they are saying is they have a very close tolerance piston and cylinder. The tip of the piston has a pocket to hold a combustable tinder material and that by rapidly slamming the piston into the bottom of the cylinder the air in front of it will heat enough to flash burn and ignite the tinder material. Looks like the trickiest thing is to get that out and into a tinder bundle to actually get the fire going.

I do like how you can bleed out the extra pressure for storage and that the rod won't just fall out.

I have seen clear plastic ones on ebay. They say you can see the flash when it ignites.
