    Question Any Steyr owners?

Been looking at the Steyr M9 and to be honest I think it looks pretty cool. A fair amount of the reviews I've read are very favorable and say it's quite accurate and comfortable to shoot. I just don't know anyone who has a Steyr handgun and don't know much about them. Price wise they look like a pretty good deal.

i had a Steyr M40A1, basically the same pistol in .40, and it was a pretty good gun. it shot nice and as per the reviews it was accurate to boot. the only trouble i had with it was the lack of holsters made for it. i was going to make it an EDC but a variety of carry options was hard to come by so i traded it for a G27 instead.

on the other hand i do currently own a pair of Steyr GB's and love the hell out of them. they are a full frame 9mm (think Beretta M9 size) and hold 18+1, polygonal rifling in a frame mounted barrel with delayed gas blow back system. accurate as sin! too bad they only made about 15k of them because i think they are great. spare parts are unobtanium but that's why i have two.

but back on topic, they Steyr M9/M40 platform is good to go IMO. and the sights are trippy. trapezoidal and interesting to get used to.

I have a M9. Nice gun. Very light. Minimal recoil. Similar to a Glock in many ways. In one way it is better as it has a fully supported chamber. I think the disassembly is easier than a Glock although similar. The thing I don't like is the grip angle which makes me tend to shoot low if rapidly acquiring a target. I believe I got my M9 holster from Bladetech.

Thanks for the replies. Broondog, a friend of mine had a GB back in the mid 1980's. I recall it had a greenish, parkerized finish to it. Always stuck in my mind due to the magazine capacity. Highest I recall at the time and not many beat it today. I've actually run across a couple of Rogaks locally which where the precursor to the GB.

the Rogak proved to be one horrible pistol and should be relegated to paperweight status if you ask me.

your friend must have had one of the military versions of the GB. around 700 GB's were manufactured with the parkerized finish vs the civilian "crinkle" finish on the frame. funny thing about the park'd version, or at least the one i own, is that it only likes the parkerized mags it was intended to have. a blued one will not lock up right and they appear to be completely identical save the finish. but the park'd mags run fine in my civi pistol. strange circumstances indeed.

I had a Steyr M9 for a while, I liked the sights and the safety, both not quite what you expect on a pistol but functional. The grip was a bit small and narrow for my paws though, and I ended up selling / trading it. Still, I wouldn't mind having another.

Yep, I heard they were crap. The one I found was NIB and was priced around $450 IIRC. Thought it was interesting so did some research thinking I might go back and get it. Based on that research I never did. Shop it was in has long since closed but I still remember is as it was very similar, appearance wise to the GB. One of those firearms oddities that I guess, for the right price might make an interesting conversation piece but that's about all it would be worth.
