Update on my Hiking Club at my school......

Was trying to get the 1st Armored Div to maybe donate 10-20 MOLLE II rucks for my kids to use in Utah next year, but they declined to help out. I got the vibe I was just bugging them. Oh well, going to hit up the Marine Corp now, but I don't really have any faith. Figure I will just have to ask the kids to gear up themselves, and I can offset that with my fund raising. Don't know if I mentioned this, but a few weeks ago I spent a weekend at a local gun show (with my bosses permission) and raffled a Marine ILBE pack for $310 bucks. I am thinking I can encourage the kids to get ILBE's off of ebay for $50-60, which is substantially cheaper than civilian packs. I don't really get why the army or marine corp cannot donate 20 rucks, when all they are doing is auctioning them off and throwing them out.

Have 25-30 kids starting out. Believe it will wither down to about 10-15 by the end of the year. Hoping to take my kids to Death Hollow Utah, probably over memorial weekend after school gets out. Got permission to take them to the family owned cattle ranch for a weekend in October or November, along with taking them camping at a local state park. Going to fish, hike, MAYBE target shoot (still figuring that one out). Have a ton of parent volunteers, staff volunteers. Have a couple teenage girls wanting to do the 24 mile Death Hollow hike, and luckily for me I have some female staff willing to do it and help out.

As a teacher I LOVE introducing kids to new things. History, movies, reading, anything. Taking a bunch of kids who have never been west of dodge city ks to Utah, across the Rockies, and into some magnificent natural scenery is just going to be awesome. I believe it is going to come off. Extremely excited. One student is a senior I had 4 years ago as a freshman, who has wanted to do this for two years now. Couple other senior boys are pumped, along with a collection of other kids.

    Pumped.

Maybe if you told them it was a youth paramilitary association like the boy scouts they'd send you an mrap?

Well, an mrap would allow me to take them on some even better hikes!

In the end, it is sad that I cannot get a few. How many thousands of these are now being just surplused off, at 1/20th the price paid for them by the tax payer? The marines are now ditching the ILBE and adopting the FILBE, so they are throwing out thousands and thousands of ILBE's. I guess I do not now why I cannot get 15-20 of them. But, I can wish in one hand and shit in the other, and by now its obvious which one is filling up. So, we'll find another way.

NOT given up on the marines yet. Going to call them Monday. Also considering contacting my Senators about this to see if they can help me. I am not asking for a lot here. This would substantially help out, and lower the cost for my kids.

Walmart has some very reasonable back packs. I looked at this one after I bought my 5.11 at over 5x the price. Seems pretty well built and the design is similar to my 5.11. Might be worth buying one and trying it out...

This one is a little higher priced but larger & nicer. Almost identical to my 5.11:

We found out what "dealing" with progressive lefties is all about. Our side gives up something, they give up nothing and the progressives come back in a month or a year and want us to give up more... rinse and repeat...

That is where you can buy the surplus packs, but the surplus are as much as I paid for my 5.11...

The LA Police Gear brand bags are well made. I have $50 "operator" bag, they also have a $30 "three day bag".

Its seems much better made than the Field line pack I bought from Walmart a couple years ago. That thing started to rip at about the one-year mark.

Ebay is somewhat cheaper for ILBE's. I am hoping to get maybe 8-10 kids on a serious hiking trip in utah, and get them into packs. I personally feel the ILBE is the best bang for the buck. Lok on ebay, you can get them in excellent used condition for $60-80, sometimes cheaper.

The second one on my Walmart post, was that the one you had that came apart?

They looked pretty good in the store...

Not quite, but it does look similar.

I can post a picture of it later to help you guys avoid it.

I've seen those before. At this point, I am going to wait on buying any gear.

I know I am taking them camping at a ks state park in late September, and then in late October taking them to my family cattle ranch for a night, possibly two. The spring will be when we start planning on gear buying, stuff like that. I am not positive yet where I will be taking them. I really think it will be utah. Might be two trips, by the way, the way its working out. Might take one group to Moab, then take another group of boys on the death hollow hike. THOSE guys will need to buy gear.
