    question about a sling

I bought a 1907 type sling. I have been working the leather for colour and flexibility.
while I have been doing this I have noticed that the brass hooks want to push themselves
out of the holes in the sling when tightened.
how would I go about bending the brass a little more?
right now they are at about a 45 degree angle to the leather when inserted.
I want it to look good with no tool marks, it is not much money if I mess it up
but it is not much money that I do not have.
While no one ever listens to me,
I am constantly being told to be quiet.

Couple things I do when I don't want to mar something. You could wrap pliers in tape and bend or place a piece of scrap leather or something over the hook if you don't have a plastic hammer and tap it with a regular hammer to bend the hook a little.

I would place something under the hook too to keep it from bending too much.

Got wood? Place a piece of 2x4 over the hooks and whack it with a hammer. As suggested it would be best to put something inside the hook curve to prevent over closing them.
