    Question Sooting

Been a few years since I reloaded for my Berthier in 8x50 Lebel. Last time I used bullets culled from some Turk 8mm I had and new cases from Graf & Sons. The reloads shot to point of aim at 100yds and everything chambered and extracted just fine but I noticed soot on the fired cases. I presume this is because case mouth didn't expand enough to fully seal the chamber? Can't remember what powder I used at the time but it was one listed for the 8x51 and as I recall it was pretty much in the middle of the max and min powder charges. Am I correct or could there be another cause for the soot? TIA
