Damn, I must be crazy. Or, I have a death wish for my career right?
I already talked to my principal, and he gave me his approval (good guy, is a gun owner and ar owner himself). As long as it is not district or school sponsored, and its MY ass on the line, it is ok with him. I am considering drawing up the waivers, parent forms, and all of it, charging the kids $15 -$20 a person to take them 50 minutes away to a state run free outdoor shooting range. Have two other male history teachers I am friends with in my department that want to do it, both being gun owners themselves. One has an M1 garand, 8mm WWII german mauser, and a flintlock. I'd bring my m91/30, MK12 Ar, beretta, and my Pietta 1860 Colt repro. I've trained a lot of people on firearms, lots of people who had never even seen one before, so I know I can do it safely. Have a group of about 8 kids who say their parents will be cool with it, and really want to try it. Crazy?
Oh, taken them on two trips so far. First was a day hike two weeks ago on a Saturday. Last weekend was a trip to my family cattle ranch with 12 kids, coed, and a bunch of teachers. One night. Had a great time on both. The first trip, the day hike, had a bad experience with a kid from another school who was chucking LARGE softball sized boulders and beer bottles off of a ledge at my group 25 feet below. I climbed up out, ran the kid down, and confronted him. To be honest, I kinda lost my temper with him. 15 years old, and throwing large rocks at my group. To be blunt, I told the kid I'd kick his ass and then turn him into the cops if he did it again. Was out of site and hearing of my group. His eyes got big, and I told him to get his wallet out with his id. Took a pic of his drivers licence/permit. Ha, then, later just turned him in anyway. Was seriously pissed about that.
Second trip last weekend, was sitting around a fire with my 12 kids and the staff that came along, listening to the wild dogs and coyotes in the hills. Had both my legs cramp up at the same time in front of all the kids, had them all laughing, had two of my senior boys helping me stretch and work my legs to get them to stop cramping. Kids were laughing hard, and filming me as they did this to me and I ended up accidentally farting.....I know, I know. But put yourself on your back, 1 hour after eating pork and beans and hotdogs, put both your legs straight up in the air, next to a bon fire, 12 kids and 5 adults all around you laughing, and tell me you could stop that from happening. Was embarrassing, but the kids loved it and though it was hilarious. All in good fun though.
Been fun. Wondering if I dare pull off a shooting trip like this or not. So far, its been good and the kids have been great. Really, a dream come true. The girl we sent to china is involved, and is really wanting to try shooting. Dare I?
