Considering taking my high school outdoors club on a NON SCHOOL SPONSORED SHOOTING TRIP......

Damn, I must be crazy. Or, I have a death wish for my career right?

I already talked to my principal, and he gave me his approval (good guy, is a gun owner and ar owner himself). As long as it is not district or school sponsored, and its MY ass on the line, it is ok with him. I am considering drawing up the waivers, parent forms, and all of it, charging the kids $15 -$20 a person to take them 50 minutes away to a state run free outdoor shooting range. Have two other male history teachers I am friends with in my department that want to do it, both being gun owners themselves. One has an M1 garand, 8mm WWII german mauser, and a flintlock. I'd bring my m91/30, MK12 Ar, beretta, and my Pietta 1860 Colt repro. I've trained a lot of people on firearms, lots of people who had never even seen one before, so I know I can do it safely. Have a group of about 8 kids who say their parents will be cool with it, and really want to try it. Crazy?

Oh, taken them on two trips so far. First was a day hike two weeks ago on a Saturday. Last weekend was a trip to my family cattle ranch with 12 kids, coed, and a bunch of teachers. One night. Had a great time on both. The first trip, the day hike, had a bad experience with a kid from another school who was chucking LARGE softball sized boulders and beer bottles off of a ledge at my group 25 feet below. I climbed up out, ran the kid down, and confronted him. To be honest, I kinda lost my temper with him. 15 years old, and throwing large rocks at my group. To be blunt, I told the kid I'd kick his ass and then turn him into the cops if he did it again. Was out of site and hearing of my group. His eyes got big, and I told him to get his wallet out with his id. Took a pic of his drivers licence/permit. Ha, then, later just turned him in anyway. Was seriously pissed about that.

Second trip last weekend, was sitting around a fire with my 12 kids and the staff that came along, listening to the wild dogs and coyotes in the hills. Had both my legs cramp up at the same time in front of all the kids, had them all laughing, had two of my senior boys helping me stretch and work my legs to get them to stop cramping. Kids were laughing hard, and filming me as they did this to me and I ended up accidentally farting.....I know, I know. But put yourself on your back, 1 hour after eating pork and beans and hotdogs, put both your legs straight up in the air, next to a bon fire, 12 kids and 5 adults all around you laughing, and tell me you could stop that from happening. Was embarrassing, but the kids loved it and though it was hilarious. All in good fun though.

Been fun. Wondering if I dare pull off a shooting trip like this or not. So far, its been good and the kids have been great. Really, a dream come true. The girl we sent to china is involved, and is really wanting to try shooting. Dare I?

Oh, the range has a state park officer at it at all times. 4 second shot rule, park officer present all the time, so its pretty safe.

I think it's a great idea. So long as their parents are on board, I say go for it!

Have to agree. Can't let the liberal hoplophobes have the only say in the 2A.

What fills me with terror is the idea of some angry, socialist parent getting the permission slip and calling the district and my boss. Again, it would be non affiliated, so I believe the most they could say is 'call him'. Don't think it would be grounds for a lawsuit or anything like that. I am on my 4th year, and am fairly well liked by my building overall, so getting rid of me for it would be hard. Again, I know I can do it safely, as I know the kids are responsible and will do what I tell them.

First off, sounds like you handled that well. Good for turning him in, sounds like he could have done serious damage. You never know if one of these kids turns out to be a psychopath, it's best to get his behavior on record.

On the trip, sounds like a great idea, obviously you know the risks.

Might be a good idea to take a bolt .22 if you have one, very good for those first safe shots with new shooters.

Nice that you are taking some black powder guns, but might be best for demonstration purposes.

Personally, I'd probably hold off on pistols altogether for the kids. Also consider breaking it into 2 trips if you have any concerns about the larger group getting unwieldy.

Lastly, you might want to call the range ahead of time, they might be able to lend you another set of hands, or some other perk and or advice.

I've taught kids as young as 7 how to shoot Ar's and Tavors with their parents permission. When the kids you teach already have the basics from call of duty , the rest is basic marksmanship fundamentals .

+1 on kadmos.. no handguns, simple .22 guns maybe .223 . Dont send kids home with rainbow shoulders or headaches.
You can demonstrate though/give a history lesson.

When it comes to kids. I think the biggest thing is teaching them that this isn't a game.
Safety at the upmost and if they find a gun to tell an adult.
Pound gun safety into their heads.

    Well, regardless, it went well.

With my Beretta m9, I started them off with 1 rd in the gun after an intro to the gun, proper hold, etc. One rd, the gun locks open, I know immediatly how they handle the gun after a rd, know they aren't going to point it at people. Then start them with 2 rds, and then 5, and then 10. Takes time, but its a slow and gradual start. Did the same with my ar15, although thats not usually the kind of weapon I have seen people, after the first rd, point sideways to look at. Its just safety, all the same. Again, the kids loved it all.
