frame style on Smith revolvers

Please explain to me the difference in K, L, N, J, style frames and why they are called this.

There was also an I frame that was smaller than the J and at least one example made on a C frame which, IIRC was between the J and the K in size but it never made it past the prototype stage. There is a photo of a C frame in the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson 3rd Edition.
