    boiling water

    ok, stupid question coming.

boiling water to purify it to drink..... how???

i have casted and smelted metals before. i know thet when doing so, the impurities will either rise to teh top and you will have to scrape the dross off, or settle to the bottom. when boiling questionable water for drinking, do similar things need to be done?? or just boil and thats it??

    biggest concern is bacteria.

if theres other things in it I suggest simple cheap coffee filters.

as said above, boiling is for bacteria only, it won't get rid of chemicals or sediment. If you're concerned about either of those you would need to distill the water rather than just boil it.

if you've ever lived off of well water, you've drank sediment/elements.

If you're gathering water around a Paint factory or nuclear power plant I'd be worried.

Shit like Fluoride and man made bacteria killers are the worst in the water.

no nuke plants. just thinking of going lighter/more primitive camping/hiking. if it is somewhere where i am going to overnight and have to have a camp fire, im thinking of alternatives to carrying shit loads of water. it would be out of clean freshwater lakes and streams, not directly downstream of an industrial complex, and not muddy water. i also recently picked up one of those sawyer micro filters, but im not keen of relying solely on a fallible device.

boil it then run it through the filter.

Moving water is key, avoid stagnant water if possible.

Probably would have a taste. It is good to have more than one way to purify water. Maybe you can't get a fire started to boil. Two is one and one is none.

true, i absolutely see your point and agree, but im not talking shtf/survival here, im talking about leisurely hiking and camping out in the mountains somewhere, i wont be doing it in harsh adverse conditions where i might not have the means or materials to make fire, its gonna be pretty much a guarantee.

Then I would agree boiling would be preferable.

Shouldn't boiling would get rid of the more volatile compounds like benzene, toluene and xylene?
