Military vehicle fans: HMMWVs now being auctioned off!

    It's about time!

Public auction of military Humvees creating a buzz

    http://www.foxnews.com/leisure/2014/...tcmp=obnetwork

Off-roading fans are in for one humdinger of a day. On Dec. 17, the first public auction of military HMMWVs will give civilians a chance to own a Humvee.

The online event -- the first since new rules were established to allow for private sales of the legendary 4x4s -- is being handled by IronPlanet through its GovPlanet.com marketplace, where it will be offering an initial batch of 25 HMMWVs from the 1980s and 1990s. Approximately 4,000 more trucks are under review and could be released for sale in the coming months. Government agencies get first dibs on the ex-military trucks before they're handed off to the auction house.

Nice but I'd rather have an MRAP, or an M1A1 Abrams.

I believe I read that they would not be "street legal" and could not be licensed for operation on the street.

Depends on the state. I believe in Indiana it could be registered something like a home build.

Worked on the transmissions on many, would love a HEMTT!!! or one of the FMTV. or a HMMWV. or a ...

Been waiting for this, Government liquidation lost the contract to sell the rolling stock, it's now govplanet selling it. They have minimum bids unlike GL which turns me off. I've gotten trucks for less than their minimum bids with GL.

Just looked at one that had only 6,000 miles. Is that a lot for a military vehicle? Seems like every time I see something like this, it only has 3-7 grand on it, and they are selling it. Why? Seems low to me, and like it would still have years of service left.

It would probably depend on the year it was built. None of these vehicles are equipped with current federally-mandated safety equipment (besides seat belts/horn), but it may be possible to license one that was made before certain items like airbags and such were required (1996 and older). That's just an assumption, though. They do have the basics like a horn, windshield wipers, mirrors, seat belts, and all of the necessary exterior lighting (no third brake light, though).

Yep sold without title. Here in VA there is no way I know of to license one. I guess you could go with "Farm Use" but that's about it.

Ah, didn't even think about the whole lack of a title issue.

Don't get one I've never seen a vehicle that broke down more often than an HMMWV. Radiators falling off, engines blowing, and transmission issues were rampant on many of them.
When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, and he looks you crooked in the eye and he asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" "Yessir, the check is in the mail." ----- Jack Burton 1986

^Strange, I thought they used Allison transmissions? I've never seen an Allison tranny take a dump.

The 7-ton MTVR trucks use Allisons. The HMMWVs have the 4-speed 4l80E (basic GM 3/4 ton truck tranny). Transmissions were always taking a dump with these vehicles when I was in, but to be fair, that transmission (or engine) was not chosen with the idea that some day the HMMWV would double in weight from all the new armor that came out during OIF. To boot, troops do not treat these vehicles with utmost kindness.

Driving a standard non-armored HMMWV and an uparmored HMMWV loaded with gear, ammo, and 5 gear-laden dudes (including the gunner) is like night and day.

Most of em sit except for a few convoys and a couple weeks in the summer. None of my 6 MV's have more than 31K on them, most below 10K. CUCV has 31K, wrecker has 20something, Deuce and a half had 5,000, tractor, 7700 ect....

All 25 HMMWVs sold. They sold for between $21,500 and 41,000. Yikes. Next auction is in January. The Gov't should have done this a long time ago, rather than throwing all that money down the drain by scrapping the things. I always hated dropping stuff off at DRMO on base and seeing the huge lot filled with perfectly good vehicles and gear that were just sitting there waiting for destruction.

The first surplus auction of U.S. Military Humvees took place on Wednesday, and they hauled in big bucks. The 25 trucks on offer at GovPlanet.com all had opening bids of $10,000 and sold for between $21,500 and $41,000. The federal government keeps 75.29 percent of the revenues.

Holy Moly. I didn't think they had that much value.

Last time I went to Camp Ripley to pick up one of my trucks, they had at least 20 HMMWVs sitting there waiting to be scrapped, and about 6 Bradleys going too.....I was just sad. We should be able to buy demilled armor too...... Pisses me off all that stuff getting cut up. 35K on up is about the going rate of the ones already out there in civilian hands.
