Salman Rushdie was in rare form.
He made some interesting points about how a lot of this Islamic extremism lies straight at the feet of those Middle Eastern governments that are vying for total control of the Muslim world: Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Yemen -- they're all ostensibly our allies, but fund all these radical madrasas and extreme religious schools, where many of these future terrorists get their learning, to try to spread each particular form of extreme Islam that is most favorable to the political goals of the host government.
Indeed, if we really wanted revenge for 9/11, we would have invaded Saudi Arabia, not Afghanistan. It was no coincidence that most of the hijackers were Saudis.
(On a brighter note, if its really true that the Iranians and even Hezbollah's leader are calling these latest attacks an insult to Islam, there may be hope yet. )
