Now that is cool. Really gets the imagination going as to why the rifle would be left against a tree. I wonder how long it was there.

I tried to push the envelope, but found that it was stationery.

Have you heard about the new corduroy pillows? They're making head lines!

On one hand, the rifle was ruined, that's always a shame. On the other, it does have the makings of some potentially interesting history.

Wonder what happened to the owner? Someone suggested it might be interesting to run a medal detector around the vicinity.

An archeologist should have been called in before anyone ever touched the rifle. They can better understand the surrounding details in the context of the rifles original position, and give you a more detailed story than the amateur metal detectors ever could.

Well, it happened to me once. I was shooting a shotgun out in the woods one day and for what ever reason. Rested it up against a tree. Went back to the truck to get some more shells. Forgot exactly where I left the gun. It took me about an hour to locate it. Learned an important lesson there! So, it could happen that someone years ago leaned it up against a tree and "lost it." Or maybe the person had an accident and passed away in the near area. Still a cool find.

I'd be more interested is how it got there and what happened to the carrier! Lot of blank history in that one.
