    Thumbs up Buck Nighthawk 655

Picked this 2008 model 655 up for $45 today. Pretty much new condition with some scuffs on the blade but still had a sharp factory edge. I've got another one just like it but figured for the price why not. Of the various Nighthawk models I prefer the ones with the stonewash blades rather than the black nitride coating and without the holes in the blade that the new ones have since Buck and TOPS collaborated on them. Really a great little fixed blade.

As do I. Here are some others I have including the twin of the one I got yesterday.

Buck used to catalog them with both blade lengths, either coated or uncoated blade and green/black or grey/black handle as well as a partially serrated version though I don't recall if that was offered on all blade lengths and finishes.

The current offering in collaboration with T.O.P.S. knives is the black blade in two different lengths. IMHO the older ones like mine are a great value. If you run across one it would make a great truck knife, something to throw in the box with your camping equipment, junk drawer in the kitchen, etc. Really any place where a fixed blade knife could come in handy. They aren't a super "tacticool" blade but they are sturdy and well made. Heck, I think the handle would even insulate you if you needed to cut a live wire.

I like it better with the stone washed blade as well.

With a rubber handle they should be insulated electrically, though I am sure there is no electrical insulation rating given to the handle.

I tried to push the envelope, but found that it was stationery.

Yeah, I've never really been a fan of coated blades. I've got a few and in fact on one of my Buck Custom Shoppe 110's I ordered the blade with the black coating to get the look I wanted but that blade was designed more for a particular look rather than a specific function which was what I wanted.

In general I guess the black nitride coating does protect the blade but only until it's worn off by use. Having a non-reflective blade is probably a benefit if you're a hunter or actually a military operator but for the most part I think it's more marketing than anything else.
