    It's been around for a while. The database is obviously not complete, but can be a good tool.

    Sadly, as a guy that takes a lot of theft reports, I can tell you that the biggest impediment to returning stolen guns is the owners don't have the serial numbers to report them stolen by. Some don't even know the make model and caliber.
    Make a list and keep it updated. Make a copy of the list and store it away from the guns.

    Great point Scott. Here is a review of some inventory programs specifically for firearms. I use the one called Gun Safe. Its great and free. Sadly I don't know if it is still available. I clicked the link at the end of the article and it was not there.
