Like with all other forms of DSL, it just depends on how close you are to a CO (Central Office). Most urban and suburban areas would qualify, but if you are out in the sticks, you might not get very good signal quality, and thus your actual upstream/downstream throughput might not be as impressive as they claim.
Do they have a trial period, where you could keep your current satellite provider but try out the VDSL service for a week or so, so that you could compare the two side-by-side and see if your throughput is any better? Don't forget to use this site to test your bandwidth speed and latency on your current provider, then on your new one:

Another option for you might be a service that piggy-backs on cellular signals. Do you get a 4G wireless signal where you're at? If so, I know Clear Wire has a 2-week trial period:

If you get good coverage, I bet it would be faster than satellite (at least latency-wise) -- I tried them out when my Cable provider was having serious down-times, but my 4G coverage wasn't that great, so it wasn't as fast. So I returned the modem and got a full refund (minus shipping). I just switched from Cable to DSL a couple months ago and it rocks.
