heres what i dont like about these devices. they need to be charged to work. if i have an emergency and i forgot to charge my phone, i fuck sure would not have remembered to charge this device, and these things need to be tended, they will not hold a charge indefinitely. i put together a small usb to battery adapter for such an occasion. it is horribly inefficient and not too pretty, but it is VERY small, and it lets me use any 9v battery to put an emergency charge on my phone. any when the battery is dead i can just throw it out. nothing i have to worry about getting back to a charging dock.

a commercial model like mine with a well engineered switching dc-dc converter supply in a similarly tiny package would be the nutz. i could prob throw something together if i was motivated to do so, but the linear one is working fine for now....

This is different. It isn't rechargeable, it takes a CR123a lithium primary battery, the same as I stock and stash for my flashlights. Would I want to use it on a regular basis? Nah, that would get expensive, but sometimes being able to make a phone call, or just to get a contact number off a phone, can be a lifesaver.

That would be nice to keep in the car for emergencies.
