I don't know what the insignia denotes but I assume you got a promotion. Congratulations!

Outstanding! How long have you been in, only about 5 years or so, if that long, right? Seems like you have made rate at the first opportunity each time. It seems like it is time for me to do the full court press on talking you into preparing for LDO!

I tried to push the envelope, but found that it was stationery.

He's Navy. The the E-6 chevron he posted looks funny because it's missing the rating insignia though I think the Coast Guard uses the same insignia/design.

Not quite the same, but very close.

5 1/2 years, without an EP I will be eligible for chief about the same time I hit the minimum time in requirement for LDO. Would you recommend going for it as soon as possible or wait till after I get a LCPO ride.

Frocked, they used to start paying people incrementally based on their score, but I think now everyone gets started at the same time which for this cycle is December.

As soon as possible. The window to be eligible has been reduced to 8-14 years of service so you want to take every opportunity. It takes the average LDO 3 applications to be selected. There are two things to start looking at. The time-in-service (TIS) requirement is based on service ending 1 October of the year the board meets. So for those applying to this next year's board that meets in January 2016, the 8 years TIS has to be achieved by 1 October of 2016. This means that you will have the TIS to be eligible in 2 years. Just enough time to get a really good application together! You also want to get selected early for two other reasons. First, the earlier you are selected the farther you can advance. I got selected fairly late so the farthest I could advance was CDR and now I am waiting for the Navy to tell me it is time to retire. Second, as the only LDO on the board I need a qualified relief before I retire, and you seem like a good candidate for that relief!

The other thing you will need to do, besides get your TIS, is to pass the CPO test with a grade high enough that you would be eligible for the CPO board if you had TIS to make CPO. Let me know if that confused you. So, in about September of 2017 you need to submit a Special Request Chit to take the CPO exam for LDO purposes. This way you can take the CPO exam a year before you are eligible for CPO, and if you score well enough you are able to apply for LDO.

The only other thing I would do is find a EOD LDO or Warrant and start talking to them about the program and what you should be working on now to be successful. Good luck and feel free to ask any question you have. The job I currently have gives me access to a lot of information that you will find useful.
