Doc recommended fish oil. Anybody notice a difference between taking it or not?
I would think, Phil, that as long as you aren't allergic, it shouldn't harm you. Lots of people take it along with aspirin to stave off heart issues as you know. And if your doctor is recommending it, I'd try it. I don't think you'll notice a large difference taking something like fish oil, but if at some point because of it you didn't have a stroke or heart attack, it'd be well worth it, not that you'd know for sure it had saved you, but...

It has been several years since I had a CBC done but when the results back then were ~150 on the cholesterol and the other 3 were about in the middle of the "acceptable" range. I've been on BP meds since I was about 45, "Vasotec" first until it was at 75% of max dose. Now it is Enalapril with the diuretic HCTZ and the dosage hasn't changed in 7 years.
This is despite the fact that I average 1 egg/day, eat cheese daily, and I'm ~40 lbs over where I would like to be (and about 60 over where I should be!), loved assorted chips and crackers but do NOT add salt to foods I cook - just spices.
Did you know that "Rice Crispies" cereal has more salt in 1 serving (12%) than a serving of bread (8%)?
And most "ready-to-eat" soups (Progresso, Campbell's Chunky, etc.) have between 25% and 38% salt per serving!!

    Read those labels!!

Exact numbers I don't memorize. In summary; hdl is higher than ldl. Triglycerides not out of range. Tried statins, first one tried to dissolve my muscles. That is one of the problems with these types of drugs, for some people (like me) these drugs are more dangerous than the numbers.

20mg simvastin once daily. i dont do any kinds of fish oil or vitamins, unless im getting sick (cold), then ill take a shit ton of vitamin c to shorten/stop it.

i have tried adjusting my diet (not nessicarily because of my cholesterol, i have a blood sugar issue as well) but i WILL NOT cut anything out. i try to cut back on portion sizes and i eat less junk foods. to help my blood sugar, i know i shouldnt eat ANY junk foods, but who dosent love reeses peanut butter cups, right? now, if i try to cut them out completely, it makes them taboo, and you know how human nature is, that just makes the appeal of them stronger, and imo, your just setting yourself up to fail. if i dont say "no" and just cut back, its much easier to stay on track, and after time, the urges are less naturally. soda, fo instance. i used to drink at least a 2l a day at home. ill still drink it when im out to eat, but at this point i dont even miss it, and if i could bring my own drink into a restaurant, i wouldnt even have it there. i dont think i could live without ANY red meat (or kielbasa!!)

I'm probably wrong on this, but I seem to remember a Dr telling me that taking fish oil was to keep cholesterol from sticking to the walls of the blood vessels and building up to a blockage...that it didn't lower your cholesterol.

    HDL - 64

    Triglycerides - 117

    LDL - 141

I've had elevated cholesteral for most of my adult life (family history) even though I eat a pretty low-cholesteral diet. Blood pressure has been as low as 94/60, resting pulse around 60. I've put on some weight in recent years which I really need to get rid of, but had a knee op a few months ago which has really hampered my excersize routines.

    Getting old is the suckage.

About 10 years ago my VA doc enrolled me in a cholestrol clinic at the Dallas VA hospital. The clinic doc had me on various statin drugs. My cholestrol remained the same. In the meantime, I suffered severe muscle and joint pain and kidney pain. The next month I ate two hard boiled egges every day. The next checkup my cholestrol dropped 80 points. When I told the doc what I had eaten over the last month, he threw me out of the clinic. If I had not quit taking all that cholestrol meds crap, I would not be here today.....

I got my cholesterol numbers. My good cholesterol is 60 and my bad cholesterol is 110 for a total of 170. By medical provider is pretty happy with those numbers, as am I.

    Very good.

Just got back from my workout at the cardio center at St Mary's. That damned elliptical trainer is no joke!

I feel that I work out harder on the elliptical than I do when I run, whether outside or on a machine. Some of those workout programs they have were designed by sadists.

The only thing worse than the elliptical is running stairs.

I go in Monday, Wednesday and Friday. 15 minutes warm up on the track with a brisk walk. 15 on the arm gizmo, where you are seated turning a deal with your arms like riding a bike. 15 on the treadmill. 15 on the exercise bike and end it on the elliptical torture device. I'm just dripping with sweat after all this nonsense. All the while you have a heart monitor transmitting your info to the nurses station. No fun.

It gets the ol ticker thumping pretty good. The elliptical also makes your leg muscles scream after about 5 minutes, so the last 10 are basically agony. Jeeze.
