    pissed off the neighbor

Ok, so I live in town, but my pa has roughly 13 acres sitting in the country, just a sliver of land mostly wooded/farm fields of Wisconsin and I often swing out there when i feel like dumping a quick 100 rnds through my pistol/AK, whatever. So today after 1.5 hours of shooting clays the neighbor, 400yds away, marches onto our property all pissy and pitches a fit about the noise. Maybe I'm the jackass here, but isn't that we people buy land in the country? It was the middle of the afternoon so I doubt we violated any county noise ordinance and direction of shooting was 100% safe . Anyway just curious on other peoples thoughts on topics like this are. We don't shoot on the land often, I'd say maybe once every few months and NEVER near bow or rifle deer season!

Let it go and next time invite him. If he say no he knows it is going to happen. That is the way we used to start parties (24 hour parties) that would last 2 or 3 days,
we would invite everyone on the street.

once a year it gets crazy around here. theres a big party down the road and if this year is anything like last year they'll be shooting tannerite for 8 hours straight.

then theres always the random machinegun fire thats louder/faster than an Mg42.

Ha, yep! He's pretty bold for storming onto private property whereupon there are folks shooting.

I've had neighbors 1/2 a mile away call the cops on me. When they showed up for the third time, and we were doing nothing wrong, the officer went to the compainer and warned them, the next call THEY would be in trouble!

facepalm. When you DO hear gunfire, the shooter doesn't stand there, and argue his rights about shooting on his own property. The OP has property rights that allow him to fire on his own property. If YOU know of a big city that allows this, enlighten us please

Hhmm - he's coming on YOUR property - uninvited - and advancing on you aggressively, and being argumentative where people are shooting - I'd say he's eligible for a "Darwin award".
I'd talk to those LEO's that have jurisdiction so THEY know what happened in case he tries this again (he probably will !) and they can react accordingly.
If you have cellphone service at that location, if/when this nutter comes back to complain again, call the LEOs BEFORE you even start talking to him and let them know he is trespassing AGAIN. Hopefully, you will see him before he gets close enough to hear you call the cops.
Let THEM "escort" him off the property!

    Thumbs down

We have the same problem at our gun club. Clubs been there 40+ years and as people move into the area, still pretty rural they know the club is there when they buy then after six months they start bitching and want to close down the range.

This is a problem when City dwellers move to a Rural Area to find their "peace" and try to remold it to fit their lifestyle.
Sorry City boy, but the Rural Area is rugged, rough, and loud sometimes.
If someone doesn't like it, too bad, buy more land next time.

It is probably relative but I would consider 10+ acres plenty big enough for private target shooting (depending on the adjoining urban density).

I visited a buddy with a large property in the country. At night one weekend one of the big ranches at least a mile away was having a HUGE party. They were on the other side of the small valley but you could hear EVERYTHING. Men, women talking laughing and the live music. And this was at 11:00pm. Doesn't have to always be 'guns' when in the country. I figure you gotta expect your neighbors to make all sorts of noise if you have that much land.

he actually threatened us with "consequences" at the beginning of it all at which time my brother laughed in his face, i think by the end of the conversation he got the idea. Apparently he had the in-laws over and all the dogs where going nuts, that would drive any man to the brink! The entire situation could have went down smoother if he had approached us with a cool head. I'm sure if it happens again the police will be involved.

Do your neighbors have everyone's phone number? What he should have done is make a phone call and be very friendly and say "Hey, I got in laws over and they're trying to rest. Will you be shooting for long?" Of course you don't have to oblige, but most folks will be polite when other people are polite to them He handled it all wrong. I am SURE you would have stopped had he given you a heads up that he had visitors. Again, you have NO obligation to stop, but I know being a gentleman, you probably would have

Well I am not a proponent of turning the other cheek, but it is never good to have issues with neighbors so maybe some compromise can be made. I am in a similar situation owning 11 acres surrounded by much larger tracks of land. I hear gunshots all the time, but I try to keep my shooting on my land to a few rounds here and there and don't shoot high powered rifles on my land at all. For high powered rifles I use my gun club range. The reason I don't shoot much on my land is I like to keep a low profile with respect to owning firearms. Letting people know you have guns can lead to a home invasion as someone I know found out.
