Watching the meltdown in Greece and was thinking....

Years ago I read a book by Headrick Smith called The Russians. It is an awesome read. Anyhoo, one of the things that kept people going was the black market- the underground economy. They really had a well developed system of aquiring stuff ( just not a lot of it often). I wouldn't know where to begin if things melt down here. I guess I could trade non-hybrid seads and sstuff for medicine for example..
Has anyone here ever lived in or delt with an area who had a big black market?

Can't say I have yet. But things like food and water, medicine would probably be tops on the list.

Keep in mind that you are essentially asking about personal experience in illegal activities.

In general I think it would be safe to suggest that you have a well developed network of friends and family. If something is in high demand, your social network will inform you about availability and methods of acquisition.

After studying the mass starvations in North Korea, China, and Russia I learned that the first people to die are honest people. If you want to survive morals and honesty become a fatal weakness. The strong, ruthless, and cunning will survive, the weak will be used, discarded, and die.

Lol. Ok I guess I was thinking more about a barter society as opposed to a blackmarket here. I just see changes on the horizon.

Who was that guy who lived in Argentina when it collapsed? He wrote the book on how to survive when the middle-class is destroyed.

We are watching our future. Take any news story about greece, and change the names and cities to be american, and it is scary. You guys cant see our entitled, subhuman, worthless class angry and up in arms protesting in the streets as they debate cutting entitlements? Or see the public sector employees out protesting cutting their pensions? Cant see us drowning in debt, our creditors demanding changes? Only possible difference. Could see it us selling out the tiawanese and letting china have them for a chunk of loan forgiveness. However the details work out, we are seeing our future right now in greece.

Yeah Ruskie that's kinda why I have been watching the Greek thing. I suspect they behave better than our people, as they are a homogenous society as we were somewhat during the Depression.

Greece is too small to have much of an impact on the global economy, but they are like a canary in a coal mine.

We are very vulnerable and our current leadership is doing things to increase this vulnerability and preparing for a melt down.

I'm currently trying to sell my place and want to use the equity (what's left after I pay my ex off) to purchase a smaller tract of land - say 10-20 acres and then buy a steel building to store my crap and build an apartment at one end. That will allow me to become almost debt free immediately.

That's my goal. Debt free, living in the country with preps and financial preps to "surthrive" and get through an economic depression.

If everything holds together, great! I will be in a position to build a small home - paying as I go and saving money to retire comfortably. Can't go wrong with this plan IMHO.

As far as the bartering thing, this will develop when needed. The farmer's markets will naturally expand and be locations to barter for other goods.

How many of you have watched one or more of the "Hunger Games" movies?
One of Rush's guest hosts was comparing what "Dumbo" is doing to what life is like in those movies. He believes that is the type of "government" Dumbo's handlers hope to achieve.

I would figure to survive in a barter society you would need things to barter and a means to protect it. Alcohol, .22lr, rice, and silver (nobody will have money for gold).

Many people figure Everclear (180 proof) is perfect. Has many uses other than drinking and relatively cheap to buy now.

And you sitting on your front porch with the 12 gauge is not a means of protection. You will need to sleep sometime. You will need friends ones you can trust.
When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, and he looks you crooked in the eye and he asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" "Yessir, the check is in the mail." ----- Jack Burton 1986

    Spain is next.

Also, have any of you paid any attention to the Chinese stock market? Whoa! They're hemorrhaging about a trillion per week here of late and have banned most stock sales.

    BTFD!

On a related note, I heard that the Greek banks are so desperate for cash that they have been raiding safe deposit boxes and leaving IOUs. I don't have a link, so this may be apocryphal.
