I know a gun dealer that demilled an WWII bring-back MP-40 a day before finding out that it was registered. Sadness was felt over the country.

Also had a Maxim that was spared because they found the paperwork. Those two guns sat in an attic for about 60years, never played with by the vet who brought them back.

Damn shame it had to be cut up, especially when you read the part about it being in great shape.

I wonder how many things like that have been found by people that have bought old houses ... In the attics, basements, barns etc ... and if you did what would you do with it? Spend the time and money to see if it was ever registered? And even if it was, then what? Who would own it or have rights to it?

What if you found a de-wat without papers?

At least this one could be assembled onto a dummy receiver and displayed.

Exactly ... It would be of no use unless your home ever got searched, then it would be of use to the BATFE or other LEO agency; a possible 10 year sentence, possible $10,000 fine and possibly loose your 2nd Amendment rights forever ... not to mention they would likely confiscate any other firearms you possessed.

As far as I'm concerned, with it being cut-up and offered for sale maybe some one will do something with it ...
Maybe an SOT will rebuild it ... it's too bad the family didn't benefit from its sale, you can be assured they didn't get squat, probably not even a "thank you" from the cops.

I heard a story once where someone bought an old piece of furniture at a garage sale. When they brought it home they found a Thompson SMG in it.

Now that all the WWII and Korean War vets are passing on, relatives are opening old foot lockers and searching attics and finding all sorts of things.
A couple of years ago a widow in a nearby town opened a box in the attic and found two live grenades.

Others have found "legal" M1 Carbines, .45 automatics, and foreign rifles and pistols.
They're also finding M2 Carbines, Thompson guns, Grease guns, and foreign automatic weapons.
Many call the police and turn them in, but often kids or grand kids who understand about guns strip the parts off the receiver and either scrap the receiver or turn it in to the police.
Then they can either assemble a legal gun or sell the parts.

In my case if I was lucky enough to find something illegal, I certainly would not keep it. That's totally illegal and not worth the real risk.
Back in the 60's a local important business man had a fire in his home while he was out of town. He had some difficulty explaining the German MP-40 SMG he had hanging on the wall in a basement rec room that the firemen found while putting out the fire.

What I would do, is strip the parts and either sell them or build a legal gun or display piece.

no risk unless you snitch yourself out or like to brag.

if the atf is searching your house, you're fucked anyways and an MG is the least of your problems.

Strip it and pack the kit away for future times and never say a word to anyone. Then just stand around with a
    funny grin on your face.
