    Wiping a HDD

What would you use? I am talking about trying to Hillary the drive.
    I am using DBAN: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixthe...hard-drive.htm
It is mentioned at the bottom of this article.
I am using the DoD Short programme and so far it has been running a 1 round 3 pass
format for around 9 hours (64.5%). I am using it to clean a WD Black 1TB HDD.
I don't know if this is a long time or not but the drive should be (almost) as clean
    as when I bought it.

After this I am going to load the UBUNTU 14.04.3 desktop OS on this drive and
then we will see what happens.
While no one ever listens to me,
I am constantly being told to be quiet.

you just need to format it. Linux is a different format then windows. Simply letting linux use the entire drive and formatting will remove everything.

From the 2 times I have done it, a .22, 9mm, or .45 does not penetrate the plates in a HD, but the .223 will put messy holes in them.

Just send Hillary a small donation and I am sure she would show you how to properly wipe your drive.

For reuse of a hdd, dban is pretty good and can be used to zero write every bit on a hdd in one pass, no need for multiple or random passes. Zero write meaning completely overwritten with zeros to every writable sector. If simply disposing of the hdd, just destroy it with a sledge or whatever. By the way with a zero fill, I have seen performance increases over the same drive that just had partitions deleted, or a fast wipe where only the first and past sectors of a hdd are zero filled.

Zero writing a hdd can stop the script kiddie level hackers but not the likes of the nsa. If the nsa has a drive that has been zero written they can look into the depths of the hdd platter on a molecular level and read the very first data written on it, as well as subsequent. They can also recover the last contents of dimms. Decades of billions upon billions of dollars spent on beyond state of the art technology eventually provides something akin to magic.

Yes and no mushroom. I have Win 10 with IE 11 on 1 hard drive and Linux and Firefox on another hard drive on 1 PC and then Win 7 with IE 11 on the PC I use all the time.
I just switch wiring between the 10 hd and the Linux hd to play with the different OS's. If that makes sense.
So far 10 seems ok I am just having to get used to finding where things are and
getting it to do what I wish.

Many laptop HDD's (the small 2.5 inch ones) use GLASS platters. Those shoot just fine.

Yeah most of them have glass platters, with a coating of iron oxide or some other magnetic material.

Firefox looks different from version to version (I wish they would stop changing things!!!!!!!) but the Linux version and the Windows version look identical (at least they do to me).

    I see no difference.

BTW, my wife just got fed up with Windows and I finally convinced her to try Linux. So far, so good....

Now is Win 10. On both I seem to be having a problem of pinning
my ISP home page to start up. I have to go get it.
