I just finished the book “The Cost of Discipleship” by Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Pastor Bonhoeffer was executed by the Germans about a month before WWII ended.

The book is an exposition on biblical discipleship and on the Sermon on the Mount. While seemingly different subjects he keeps bring them back to discipleship and obedience. He spends a good portion of the first part of the book explaining what “cheap grace” is and explaining the dangers associated with “cheap grace”. He also compares cheap grace with legalism, explaining that while they seem to be opposites they are actually two sides of the same coin, trusting to our own works for salvation instead of trusting in God and His word. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
