My daughter (when she was 10) shot my Beretta M9 and my 1920 Colt M1911. No problem, and she even hit the target.

ANY adult (male or female) who can't handle a "4x" caliber weapon has no business handling a gun.

I think the 45 ACP has a softer recoil than the 9mm or 40 S&W. It pushes more than it snaps... It's also usually chambered in a heavy platform.

That's true. A 1911 is quite heavy and that absorbs the harsh "snap" and makes it more into a "shove" or "push".

On the other hand, this pistol:

...is rather light and it's not all that much fun to "plink" with at the range. But if I need to defend myself from a bad guy or two, the recoil pain will be the least of my worries.

(in case you don't know, it's 45 ACP - 5 in the mag and 1 in the pipe).

    Isn't 40S&W, and 10mm the same thing? .45ACP is 11mm so I thought 40 and 10 were the same?

    Same caliber, different length case.

    Yeah the 40 is a shorter 10mm. It's like .38 Special and .357 Mag.

The 40 S&W was created to duplicate the 10mm "FBI" load which was a reduced load. It was also designed specifically to fit into the current 9mm platforms of the day.
