Thumbs up Candy as a kid

Maybe it's because the holidays are fast approaching but I was thinking today about the candy we used to eat when we were growing up. Maybe it's because I don't live in the Midwest any more or because they just quit making it but I thought it would be fun to post some of the stuff we used to eat as kids. Besides shared memories maybe some of us still have these candies available in our areas.

Some of the candy I used to love but can't seem to find any more are:

Bing Cherry Mash . Kind of a half dome of nutty chocolate with a cherry something in the center. Found something similar in Colorado one year on vacation but the name was different. Tasted about the same as I recall.

Black Jack gum. Kind of a licorice tasting gum that made your tongue black.

Fruit stripe gum. I think they still make this, just don't see it around here.

    I miss mars bars.

Oh sure, you can get them..... in Ireland.

Nothing I remember liking that I can't get now as far as I know. Loved the Hershy Kisses, Butterfingers, Baberuth, Pay Day, Resses Cups, and Snicker's bars.

I think I saw a show on the Food channel about that. They like to deep fry their Mars bars in some kind of batter. IIRC they eat more Mars bars there then just about any place else.

My sister used to like some kind of candy bar that was covered in white chocolate as I recall. Seems like it had a polar bear on the wrapper. Under the white chocolate it had a white nugat (sp) type of filling.

Oh, my wife just mentioned Chico Sticks. I think they were kind of peanut buttery inside with a crust of ground nuts as I remember. Also Laffy Taffy. Loved the cherry Laffy Taffy.

I miss the Clove gum. Occasionally, I can find it at Cracker Barrel, but nowhere else.

Around here, WalMart still carries Fruit Stripe gum.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Clark's Teaberry gum...

I don't do Walmart very often but I'll check it out.

Oh, remember bazooka bubble gum? It had the comic strip inside. I still see the Double Bubble but do think I've noticed the bazooka.

I think there is a company that bought all the rights to different candies when they were discontinued or the company that made them went out of business. They make them, maybe only seasonally or in limited runs. I'll have to see if I can find their website again.

We can get the british mars bars and the made in Canada ones here. Not much difference between the two. Aren't they the same as an American Milky Way?

My Candy memory as a kid was the barley candy that was shaped like things and was on a stick.

That photo reminds me of Rock Candy. You can still buy there around here.

Bazooka Gum can be bought at Dollar Tree stores (and it still has the comics in them).

Chico stix are still available. I think I saw them most recently in a Cracker Barrel, but I have seen them other places as well. If you go to a mall and there is a candy store in there you can generally find them there. You can get them in the full size or in bite size packages.

I miss Oompa Loompa's. They were sort of like peanut butter M&Ms but better, much better.

The other thing I miss is making peanut butter fudge. It was actually more like peanut butter candy but it was very hard to make. If you didn't cook it enough it would not solidify right. It was still good, but it was more like peanut butter syrup.

Cracker Barrel has most of the old timey candy. Bazooka is the best bubble gum, hands down.

Beechnut Fruit Stripe Gum brings back some great childhood memories. My dad was the manager of my little league team, and he wrote Beechnut about sponsoring the team. They responded with cases of Fruit Stripe Gum. Boy was I one happy center fielder!

Yup. One of the wrappers had a zebra on it, too. Not sure, but I think there was a monkey on another wrapper.

There used to be a place called the gum drop tree that specialized in bringing back the old out of business candies. I cant seem to find them now. here is a place that has plenty of the old stuff, just no wax lips and whistles etc. http://www.groovycandies.com/nostalg...andy?limit=all
