Most Heavily Armed States In America

How does your state rank in number of firearms in relation to other states?

I can't believe that MD beats TX in gun ownership percentages, or that DC is 2nd on that list. Wow!

Virginia is #5. Seems that it has more to due with population since they are looking at percentages. If you have a modest number of firearms but a low population it ranks you higher than a state with a huge number of firearms and a equally huge population. Wish they wouldn't refer to them as "registered firearms".

The whole registration thing throws it off of being anywhere close to reality. On Chicago has any registration requirement, but no registration outside of it, so 98% of the land mass and 70% of the population has no registered firearms, but we have plenty of firearms. This data set seems shoddily put together.

Guys, they're counting only NFA registered firearms:

Here is a look at per capita weapons data, based on the ATF's National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record, and 2013 data from the U.S. Census.

While the ATF's National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record is the only accessible list of its kind, it is not all-inclusive. NFA firearms only include the categories regulated by The National Firearms Act of 1934: machine guns, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns, suppressors, destructive devices like bombs and grenades, concealable devices with the ability to discharge a shot through the energy of an explosive, and any firearm with a bore over half an inch that has not been determined to have a legitimate sporting use.
And included in the registry is not only weapons in private hands, but also in law enforcement and private security entities. That thoroughly explains MD and DC.

    51. New York While this list is lengthy, it does not include categories like pistols, which make up a large percentage of the guns in the U.S. As such, the total numbers of guns in each state would actually be much higher than the figures here. This gallery is a but a snapshot of some of the broader trends.

New York comes in at number 51, with only 3.3 guns for every 1,000 residents. That's 64,353 registered firearms dispersed among 19,651,127 people. Here, two boys hold inflatable toy guns while taking part in the July 4th Liberty Festival in Liberty, New York.
If they're talking about "registered" and "not pistols", then they are referring to the idiots who complied with the NY "Safe" act.

Those numbers mean NOTHING compared to all of the pistols, rifles and shotguns in NY (including the 96-some percent of the "assault rifles" that we refused to register).

These lists are entirely bogus. The real numbers are simply not available to them and nor should they be.

Here in MS, I guarantee you that there's more than one gun per capita... Probably 1/2 the households have a deer rifle and a shotgun. We are a hunting state.

Commiefornia, for all its stupidity, still has hundreds of thousands of gun owners who own legacy guns (you know, we got most of our stuff BEFORE the state went completely bonkers). Back in 2009 the State DOJ released the number of California gun owners based purely on registration records, noting that there were many weapons which were never registered nor needed to be at the time they were acquired. We had over 7.8 Million gun owners (and that's a LOW number) Only the top 12 states have a population GREATER than the number of 'registered' gun owners in CA.

CA also estimated a 10-15% compliance with the AW ban registration requirement. With only 10-15% compliance, we still have 145,000 registered pre ban guns (original AR15s, original Norinco AKS-47s, TEC-9s, etc) and that's a fraction of whats out here. Apparently there were a lot of 'boating accidents' where the entire collection got lost in the Pacific

You do understand that any law enforcement agencies in state that have machineguns or sbr's are part of the NFA registry? They just aren't transferable to private individuals.

with the figures of over 300 million guns in this country that keep getting thrown around that would put the number on average at near 1000, for ever 1000. Those numbers don't make any sense and are probably meaningless.
