    Windows 10...yes or no

For those who've used Windows 10, how good is it, and do you recommend upgrading to it, or give it a pass?

There are privacy concerns and other issues, but from a utilization standpoint, its faster than previous versions of Windows and easier to use.

I upgraded an old laptop from windows 7 to windows 10 and its performance noticeably increased. I had already completely wiped the computer and reinstalled windows 7 once before, so I know its windows 10 that increased the performance and not the hard drive wipe.

My computer upgraded automatically because I did not opt out (still pretty irritated about that). Not a fan but I am getting used to it. Where Funky finds it increased performance I cannot say the same thing but it may be because I have to hunt to find things I used to know where were. Two specific comments about it.

    1. Every time I start my computer and log in I get a Norton advertisement that pops up telling me I don't have Norton installed. I have looked for a way to get rid of it and have not found a way.

    2. About every month or so I get updates that reset the computer. I have to redo all my internet short-cuts and log back into all my sites.

I tried to push the envelope, but found that it was stationery.

    1. Thats a common problem with Norton. I don't rememebr what to do, but google it to read how to fix it.

    2. Updates are normal, but you can set it to only update when you tell it to. That will be somewhere in "Settings", which is simply a renamed "Control Panel". In regards to your internet shortcuts and log-ins, I have no idea. I would suggest using a third party internet browser such as Mozilla Firefox.

Above all else, I recommend you get an empty USB flash drive, go to microsoft and download a file to install a clean version of windows 10 from the USB flash drive, and then do a complete wipe of your hard drive.

It was because I did a "clean installation" that it increased my performance. When simply using Windows 10 on top of the old operating system, it did NOT increase my performance. The combination of clean hard drive and fresh install did the trick. Additionally, the clean installation should come WITHOUT norton.

EVERY place I go to loads 3 times slower. I can't even get to my favorite porn site anymore because it won't load (yes I know) There is a site initiated pop-up that appears with almost every place I visit that never appeared in Win 7.
Ebay is sometimes unbearable to use because of its slowness. I get Script errors on almost every site I go to.

Also my screen resizes about 7 times a day, sometimes 3 times an hour. I don't know if its a Win problem or a laptop problem, BUT there isn't a place in Win settings to stop the sensitivity. MANY times the screen with resize with only one finger touching a key or the mouse, not even a two input like its supposed to work.

Check out the post I made once I got my new computer that had Win 10 on it.

    Thanks for the advice.

That sounds like a good, if scary, idea. I am not very computer savvy and I would hate to lose the things I have on my computer. I do have a back up (need to do another!) of my pictures and documents but wiping the hard drive clean is just not something I have done. I will look at it though.

Its not too bad. Just manually back up your photos and bookmarks and such and put on an external drive or whatever, and do the fresh install from a USB stick like I mentioned.

My mother's XP computer recently died with either an OS corruption or a MB failure. The tech we took it to tried several times over the course of 2 months to get the system to stabilize - w/o success.
So she got my XP and I had a new one built with 7.
I have seen and read too much about 10 to trust it for anything. Even though 7 comes with IE-11, I'm now used to Firefox and have been using it for a couple of years.

There are 2 pieces of hardware and one program I miss from my XP computer. That computer had an internal ZIP disc drive as well as a 3.5" FD as I store certain documents on them to protect their security. I load them (temporarily) when I need them, then pull the disks ASAP.

The software is an audio recording program called "Cool Edit 96" that I used to record music off of videotape, cut & splice sound clips, convert MP3s to WAVs for burning to CDs. Unfortunately, "96" is too old to work with 7 and I have yet to find a way around its loss.

I just visited their website and it was like taking a trip back to the late 90's.

I'm using it on 2 PC's. One is an older lap top that I took the free upgrade. The other is my desk top gaming PC I built last December. That was a totally new build, I put on Windows 10 from the get go, paid the $110 to get it on a flash drive. I don't see much difference in performance due to 10. I look at it like this, 7 is soon going to be like XP, they just will not support it. I turned off all the spy ware part of 10, plenty of videos on YouTube to show you how to go about that. Unless you are going to go Linux 10 will be your OS eventually.

Some people have 10 and have become accustomed to it and have few complaints, I have 7 and will stick with it as it does what I want it to and doesn't tell M$ everything, it may be my last M$ os. Then it's off to linux or bsd.

Linux and bsd are unix derivatives more or less. The current apple os I think are bsd based, haven't followed them in ages so unsure about todays apple os but os x is/was bsd based. Some linux and bsd os you can dl and install and they will pretty much find everything in the pc and get drivers for it on their own, others are more fiddly in that the installer must direct the os to drivers and perform other chores such as compiling options and so on and so forth. It helps to be geeky here.

    I vote NO.

But then again I'm a Linux user, so anything Windows is a "no" for me.
