    I've got some new neighbors

    Went and saw them today.
About 15 miles away but still within "neighbor" distance around these parts

We are reintroducing bison to our prairie restoration at Kankakee Sands so that our prairie can once again benefit from these grazers as it did in the past. We are excited to provide the opportunity to learn about and experience bison in their native Indiana habitat.

I'm planning on getting into some volunteer work there along with a couple other small Savanna preserves much closer to me
Nothing more than trash pick up and invasive plant removal but I think that would be awesome for an old retired guy

While I was in the neighborhood I stopped by the new range facility at Willow Slough
Looks pretty nice and way different from the last time I was there
    Only shot pictures though

    Very interesting neighbors.

    How big is that herd?

    When does the season start!

Just kidding. Bison are huge, much bigger than pictures make them seem. It is great to see them in the wild again.

Yeah it is great to have them around

    .............
    From the article:
They have initially introduced 23 bison: 16 cows and 7 bulls, with the expectation that the herd will grow to between 40 and 70 over time. Ultimately, the total number will be based on the bison’s influence on their habitat, a 1,060-acre pasture at Kankakee Sands.

From my understanding in they were pretty much wiped out by a bad winter rather than over hunting as out west
Never able to recover with settlement coming on

I'm here to tell you, Buffalo burgers & steaks are some damn good eatin'.

What improvements did they make @ Willow Slough? I haven't been there in a year or two.

I worked on a farm with about 24 bufferloe, they make a cow look small. Also they don't take to commands or even helpful suggestions very well. We got a new bull in, usually from Wyoming or some place way out west and kept them in the barn for a few days till they calm down, then release them to the herd. They stack the walls of the barn with layered bales of hay in case the new buff gets feisty, one kicked the door off. The new one I hadn't seen yet so I climbed 10 bales of hay and when I looked over the top he was eye to eye with me about 4 feet away, that's how tall some of them are. The boss always wanted to have the herd in view when he had a board meeting, so we had to round up all of them, transport them across the highway to the field surrounding the board meeting chalet, and take them back home once the meeting was over. A stampede of these behemoths is a sight to see, I was standing at the edge when it started a friend was right in the middle and I expected them to mow him down but he stood still and they just flowed around him. They're also very tasty as mentioned previously, if you're stationed at Offut, the tasy freeze or whatever the dairy queen equivalent is called right outside the Bellevue gate have buffburgers on tap.

    I have a few shots I didn't go in
Looking east from left to right it's:

Shotgun (which may still be a work in progress)

    Rifle

    Pistol

I was in a local shop today and a salesman was in there that was familiar with it
He said they charge per hour $7 for one person and 3.50 for additional party members up to four per table
He thought most of the lanes were 50 yds with two 100 yds
25 yd pistol with future plans for 7 yd lanes
Any damage to the concrete roof or supporting timbers is a $50 charge and under DNR control, they will prosecute with failure to pay
Also they break using a buzzer to change targets and that break time is included in the hourly rate
I think for ten minutes every 15 mins not sure I remember that correctly
I don't know how that compares to a couple years ago

After hearing all that I figure I'll stick to my backyard

Kingsbury Range outside of LaPorte looks very similar (more like identical) to that. Maybe they copied their layout? They charge 5.00 but I've never heard of a time limit. The buzzer isn't a bad idea imho, especially if you have newbs on the firing line. Just my 2 cents.

It may be a Bison, but It is still Americas Buffalo! We have no Buffalos in the U.S. so it fills the gap. Besides Buffalo sounds better, Sharps made a .54 Caliber Rifle to Shoot them with.
